In order to preserve competitiveness in their markets, organizations seek incessantly tools to help them manage their activities. To identify scientific production related to lean manufacturing implementation in organizations. This study was undertaken through bibliometric analysis using metadata extracted from two different scientific databases: Web of Science and Scopus, in the period from 2007 to 2018. The literature trend lies in the barriers faced by lean manufacturing implementation, in framework development to support implementation, and in model building to evaluate what has been done. The contribution of this work is in the opportunity to suggest of a knowledge repository to support lean manufacturing projects. The authors’ main discussions are related to lean manufacturing models, and the lack of sharing experiences acquired by employees during the deployment process.

Lean manufacturing implementation: bibliometric analysis 2007–2018

This chapter is focused on the more visible part of JIT, providing a detailed description of a set of basic lean manufacturing tools for a successful JIT implementation. The Lean tools explored in this chapter are: 5S, Standardized Work, SMED—Single Minute Exchange of Die, and Kanban System. The chapter is enriched with a case study used to explain the application of the Lean manufacturing tools in practice. Many examples of practical applications and some worksheets are incorporated to help managers in the implementation issues. In general, for each tool a detailed description of the tool and of its elements is presented. Next, the requirements for its implementation are elaborated. Afterwards, the implementation issues are explained, followed by a demonstration of the practical application of the tool in a case study company and an exposition of the results achieved.

Lean Manufacturing Tools

Current global economy creates intense competitive environment among businesses to ensure their survival in the present challenging market. Strategic view and formulation is crucial to enhance efficiencies and effectiveness of the businesses performance. Prior research however found lack of leader’s intervention can lead to failures in lean production implementation. Hence, this study aims to examine the influence of leadership style in the implementation of lean production. Data were gathered from randomly selected Malaysian manufacturing firms. Findings reveal a positive relationship between lean production and business performance. Specifically, democratic leadership style was identified to moderate the relationship between lean production and business performance.

Lean production and business performance: influences of leadership styles

This chapter answers the questions: What is lean manufacturing? What is Kaizen? This chapter covers a brief description of lean manufacturing foundations, its main principles and wastes, and also the benefits companies can reach with the implementation of lean manufacturing best practices, grounded on several surveys reported in literature to analyse the impact of lean manufacturing on performance. The chapter also describes the Kaizen philosophy reflecting the concern with a continuous improvement culture, where strategic areas of generic continuous improvement behaviours are enhanced. The kaizen philosophy is also presented as an innovation driver. Moreover, the main characteristics of kaizen, the kaizen events, the requirements for continuous improvement success and a set of behavioural routines critical for long-term success with continuous improvement and development over time are offered too.

espanolEste articulo describe las tendencias de estudio de manufactura esbelta mediante una revision sistematica de la literatura entre los anos 2015 y 2019 de las principales bases de datos bibliograficas. Se recuperaron 3776 articulos y se aplico un analisis de conglomerado bibliometrico por tema y ano con los metadatos y la herramienta VOSviewer. Los resultados indican que la base de datos con mayor numero de publicaciones es Science Reseach. El 36% del total de los articulos recuperados son de paises de oriente, los cuales abordan la eficiencia de procesos productivos y la productividad. Se proporciona un analisis de la implementacion de la filosofia de manufactura esbelta, asi como un resumen de las herramientas utilizadas en empresas del sector de alimentos. Finalmente, se propone un marco general que resume las tendencias en la tematica de manufactura esbelta a partir de la revision de literatura desarrollada en el presente trabajo. EnglishThis paper describes the study trends of lean manufacturing at a national and international level through a systematic review of the scientific literature between 2015 and 2019. A total of 3776 research articles were retrieved from the main bibliographic databases. Metadata and VOSviewer were used to perform a bibliometric cluster analysis by topic and year. The results indicated that the database with the largest number of publications was Science Research. In addition, 36% of all the research articles retrieved were from Asian countries and they addressed efficiency of production processes and productivity. The present article provided an analysis of the implementation of the lean manufacturing philosophy and a summary of the tools used in companies in the food sector to generate inputs that promote productivity. A general framework is proposed that summarizes the trends in lean manufacturing from the literature review performed here.

Manufactura esbelta: una revisión sistemática en la industria de alimentos

Lean manufacturing is the most convenient way to eliminate unnecessary waste and can provide what customers demand. This paper presents possibilities and sustainability of application of lean manufacturing method by using a virtual simulation of the workers performance in a line production of small and medium industry. Actual case study and Witness simulation were used in this study to find the waste that exists in the production and identified the performance of workers in the production line. Lean manufacturing concept has identified and rectified problems related to low productivity in the assembly line. The case study is involved a line production for electronic part assembly. The result of this preliminary study should illustrate the relationship of worker’s performance by lean manufacturing method as well as the productivity improvements which help to reduce cost for manufacturer. Lean manufacturing method has been used during the study to reduce the cost when waste is eliminated by reducing the workstation without reducing the performance of the production. The performance of the production is increased when allocating the labor in a needed working area. Lastly, the study also proves that the new layout has improved the process to be used for future production process.
