Conceptual design of automobile engine rubber mounting composite using TRIZ-Morphological chart-analytic network process technique

Cross arm is the main component used to lift the electric cable in a transmission tower. Recently, a synthetic cross arm was proposed to substitute the wooden cross arm due to the extreme creep deformation, which can induce a structural collapse. Several creep studies were conducted on a coupon scale for the synthetic cross arm. However, there is a lack of study on the assessment of creep properties for the actual size cross arm. Thus, the development of a special rig is required to accommodate the creep test. The paper explains the development of creep testing rig for a full-scale cross arm using the integration of theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), morphological chart, and analytic network process (ANP). In the beginning, the finding of principle solutions was conducted using the TRIZ contradiction matrix. The characterisation of the design concepts was elaborated using the morphological chart. Finally, the ANP principle was exploited to select the best design via the pairwise comparison technique. The results show that Concept Design 5 (hybrid bracing design) scored the highest value and ranked first. Lastly, challenges on the design of creep testing machine and the improving criteria in concurrent engineering is presented.

Conceptual design of creep testing rig for full-scale cross arm using TRIZ-Morphological chart-analytic network process technique

The hybridisation of conceptual design methods is presented in the development of multi-operations creep flexural test rig. The paper explains the integration of theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), Morphological chart, and Analytic Network Process (ANP) method to ensure the quality function is fulfilled with the essential requirements. The objective of this project is to produce and choose the best design concept for the product development depending on the product design specifications (PDS). In the early stage of product development, the TRIZ contradiction principles and 40 TRIZ inventive solutions were applied as the guidance tools. To refine the specification of the product design, the principle solution parameters were detailed systematically with the aid of morphological chart. In this article, four innovative conceptual designs of the multi-operations creep flexural test rig were produced and the selection process was conducted using ANP method to perform the multi-criteria decision making process in selecting the best concept design.

Conceptual design of multi-operation outdoor flexural creep test rig using hybrid concurrent engineering approach

Many research papers are published in the field of materials selection for manufacturing process and design of polymer composite materials. However, least consideration has been given for material selection of natural fibre composites. Intensive research carried out to use natural fibres as alternative materials for petrochemical based synthetic materials to enforce green technology in manufacturing engineering. There are several algorithm and methods are being proposed by various researchers in this field. Computer oriented materials selection and knowledge-based expert systems are the prevailing approach in materials selection. In this paper, we develop a technology for the materials selection system using Java based expert system. The weighted-range method (WRM) was implemented to identify the range value and to scrutinise the candidate materials. The expert system performance tested with automotive component as case study with high, medium and low precision criteria and the result sets generated by the expert system comply with industrial benchmark.

A Short Review on Automobile Dashboard Materials

As a consequence of rapid development in material technology, determination of the right material for a given engineering application was viewed as a crucial decision. Various polymer materials selection methods have been developed to assist designers to determine the right polymer for a given engineering application. This paper presents a new natural fibre composite material selection process for automotive dashboard using expert system. The software tool chosen to assist the development of this expert system is PHPMyAdmin. The software tool was written in Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) language designed to handle the administration of My Structure Query Language (MySQL) server over the World Wide Web. Various polymer composite properties are considered in order to develop the system. The focused properties of composites in this study are the density, Young’s modulus and tensile strength. In order to demonstrate the system implementation, a car dashboard has been selected as a case study. It has been shown that using PHPMyAdmin for polymer composite materials process can assist designers to determine the right polymer composites for a given engineering application.
