Home Networking Systems (HNS) play a crucial role in achieving broadband service delivery to end users and are quickly becoming the next arena for telecom operators and companies. This emphasizes the need for a technology roadmap in order to address several key issues associated with the deployment of these systems. The present paper presents the results of the European project ICT-OMEGA road mapping effort for future HNS focusing on the most indicative and critical function, namely that of network extension. Taking into account the various social, economic and technological factors, three alternative technologies, namely the 802.11n, 60 GHz and Power Line Communications (PLC) have been ranked, using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Based on a number of expert surveys, the technology value of each solution is calculated. The results indicate that PLC possesses the largest potential for delivering broadband services in the home environment but also underlines the need for hybrid solutions. The results also reveal various crucial aspects of HNS deployment which are related to current research and standardization activities. A sensitivity analysis is also performed to ascertain the reliability of the results.

Characteristics of radio transmission over polymer optical fiber for indoor wireless coverage

Pervasive computing environments require ubiquitous interfaces for customers. The emerging wireless technology-Ultra Wide Band (UWB) is expected to be a promising candidate in these environments thanks to the efficiency of impulse radio (IR). Former MAC protocols for narrow band became unfit for the novel UWB PHY and numbers of protocols emerge. In this paper, the primary MAC protocols classified into two categories are reviewed and compared. The analyses are focus on MAC organization, media sharing and superframe framework. Based on these analyses, the UWB issue and innovation in MAC design are proposed.

Media Access Control Protocols Review for UWB Networks

Problem statement: The Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) Based Ultra Wideband system (UWB) is highly susceptible to symbol timing error. Symbol timing estimation in MB-OFDM based UWB is difficult due to the presence of strongest path at delayed instant. Approach: Symbol timing estimation has two steps namely a coarse estimation and a fine estimation. In this study, a maximum likelihood framework for the fine timing estimation is proposed. It utilizes the delay embedded in the estimated Channel Impulse Response (CIR) obtained from the cross correlation of training sequence with the received sequence. Results: The performance of the proposed method is analyzed in terms of probability of correct timing detection. It is observed that the proposed technique has better probability of correct timing detection performance compared to the existing algorithm, in all the UWB channel models proposed by IEEE 802.15.3a working group for UWB systems. Conclusion: A novel method to estimate fine symbol timing error for MB-OFDM based UWB system is proposed. This method will be suitable for MB-OFDM receivers for UWB positioning and UWB communication.

Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) is a wireless technology system that offers a high data rate within a short range. Therefore, IR-UWB system is regarded as an excellent physical layer solution to the multi-piconet Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) applications. In spite of all the advantages of IR-UWB, there are several fundamental and practical challenges that need to be carefully addressed. The big and most important one among these challenges is the interference. Two types of Rake receivers are designed and simulated to highly mitigate the MUI these are (PRake receiver) and (SRake receiver). Matlab- Based Interference Mitigation in WPAN IR-UWB

Short-range wireless systems have recently gained a lot of attention to provide seamless,
multimedia communications around a user-centric concept in so called Wireless Personal Area
Networks (WPAN). Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) technology presents itself as a good candidate for the
Physical Layer (PHY) of WPAN, both for high and low data rate applications. Many ongoing
developments of Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) system concentrate mainly on the physical layer, without
significant considerations being given to the medium access techniques especially for targeted ad-hoc
networking scenarios. Here, we further refine the framework, the network challenges, and defines a
global network cost function, which takes into account both physical, and network layers parameters to
derive general guidelines for ad-hoc networks based on UWB technology.
