Welcome to the second installment of IJBDCN. This issue contains three research papers and a comprehensive survey article on mobile ad hoc networks. We would like to publish a couple of survey or tutorial articles per year as we believe this to be of value to our readers. Many research papers are necessarily focused and do not allow for a " panoramic " view of a particular subject. This is the gap that well-written survey or tutorial papers can fill. We are also planning a guest-edited special issue for the last quarter of this year and welcome your suggestions for future special issues of the journal. This second issue starts with a paper entitled " An Approach to Solving the Surviv-able Capacitated Network Design Problem " where Sridhar and Park studied the problem of selecting links of a network to construct primary and secondary routes for transfer of commodity traffic between nodes of the network. Their technique allows the design of survivable and cost-effective networks. In the second paper, " Query Processing Strategies for Location-Dependent Information Services " , Jayaputera and Taniar propose a new approach to generate a query result for location-dependent information services (LDIS). They argue that choosing a square as the scope of a query and dividing it into four equal regions, where a user is a center point of the scope, results in a faster searching time to find targets queried and brings a bigger chance to get rare targets. In addition, by avoiding resubmitting the same queries when the query results missed, the approach reduced bandwidth use at both the server and client sides. The third paper, " Addressing SPAM E-Mail Using Hashcash " by Curran and Honan tackles a problem experienced by most of us. The authors present the Hashcash proof-of-work approach and investigate the feasibility of implementing a solution based on that mechanism along with what they called a " cocktail " of antispam measures designed to keep junk mail under control. Finally , in the last paper, entitled " MANET: Applications, Issues, and Challenges for the Future " , Dhar presents an informative survey of mobile ad hoc networks, describing the main characteristics of those networks and how they are being used, and discussing the most pressing issues and challenges associated with these temporary wireless networks. Distributed denial of service (DDoS) resilience in cloud

The purpose of this study is to explore the level of attitude towards problem solving and mathematics achievement among students from Malaysian Institute of Information Technology, Universiti Kuala Lumpur. This study also observes the relationship between the level of patience, confidence and willingness towards problem solving and mathematics achievement. This research is a survey study that is conducted on 153 semester one students at diploma and bachelor program. This research uses one set of questionnaire to gather data. The data is then analyzed using The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The descriptive and inferential statistics analyses are used to analyze all the research questions. The research findings reveal that the level of patience, confidence and willingness towards problem solving are medium. The findings also show that there is significant relationship between the level of patience towards problem solving and mathematics achievement. On the other hand, the finding shows that there is no significant relationship between the level of confidence and willingness towards problem solving and mathematics achievement. This research also reflects that there is significant relationship between attitude (patience, confidence and willingness) towards problem solving and mathematics achievement. Finally the research draws conclusion and recommendation based on students’ attitude towards problem solving and the ways to improve students’ achievement in mathematics.

Factors that influence students in mathematics achievement

The internet is gaining a lot of importance day by day, especially with the emergence of cloud technology. This new technology has made a new computing service to end users that include, PaaS, SaaS. On the other hand, this technology was accompanied with some shortages. The most serious obstacle is the security challenges because of the cloud is characterized by computing resource sharing and multi-tenancy features and as a result flooding based denial of service attack has been observed. This effect on performance and quality of service on cloud. To overcome this security challenge, there are several methods to detect and prevent this kind of attack. Most of these approaches are using statistical and/or artificial intelligence methods.In this research paper a new model to detect flooding based DoS attack in cloud environment has been suggested consisting three phases. (1) The first-phase is to model the normal traffic pattern for baseline profiling and (2) the second phase is the intrusion detection processes and (3) finally prevention phase. The covariance Matrix mathematical model is used as detecting method. The phase (1) and (2) have been implemented in real test bed. From the result, it is proven that we can detect the flooding attack effectively.

Detecting flooding based DoS attack in cloud computing environment using covariance matrix approach

this research was developed to produce a prototype product of a Web Based Temperature Monitoring system that allows the user to continuously monitor the temperature condition of a room. This prototype system is enhancement from the existing system that allowed the data to be monitored anytime and anywhere from the Internet and using new approach. This research development project was divided into two parts that involved with the hardware and software. The hardware part involved building the temperature sensor board and for the software part involved written programming and construct coding using C language program. The programs then are uploaded into the microcontroller which then created Visual Basic 6.0 application to display the temperature and saves the data into a database. An active Server Page (ASP) scripting language is used as server side scripting to publish the current temperature at the web browser. This prototype of a Web-Based Temperature Monitoring has met all the objectives derived and planned. The research project is considered successful and ready to be launched in the real system implementations.

Mathematical analysis of a food-web model

The flooding of spam emails in email server is an arm- race issue. Even until today, filtering spam from email messages has still become as an ongoing work by researchers. Among all of the methods proposed, methods by using machine learning algorithms have achieved more success in spam filtering. Unfortunately in machine learning, a high dimensionality of features space after preprocessing became as a big hurdle for the classifier. Not only high dimensionality issues, the excessive number of features also can degrade the classification results. Thus in this paper, we proposed two stages of feature selection based on Taguchi methods to reduce the high dimensionality of features and obtain a good classification result for spam filtering. Firstly, we apply Gini Index feature selection to reduce the dimension of terms; and then we applied Taguchi method to assist Gini Index and PSO-SVM in selecting the best combination of parameter settings. This method is trained and tested on a Lingspam dataset. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the traditional feature selection and current work by another researcher. The result showed that our proposed method produced a good precision and recall result with the lowest number of features.
