Recent advances in the capacity of large language models to generate human-like text have resulted in their increased adoption in user-facing settings. In parallel, these improvements have prompted a heated discourse around the risks of societal harms they introduce, whether inadvertent or malicious. Several studies have explored these harms and called for their mitigation via development of safer, fairer models. Going beyond enumerating the risks of harms, this work provides a survey of practical methods for addressing potential threats and societal harms from language generation models. We draw on several prior works’ taxonomies of language model risks to present a structured overview of strategies for detecting and ameliorating different kinds of risks/harms of language generators. Bridging diverse strands of research, this survey aims to serve as a practical guide for both LM researchers and practitioners, with explanations of different strategies’ motivations, their limitations, and open problems for future research.

Language Generation Models Can Cause Harm: So What Can We Do About It? An Actionable Survey

Model-agnostic explainable AI tools explain their predictions by means of ’local’ feature contributions. We empirically investigate two potential improvements over current approaches. The first one is to always present feature contributions in terms of the contribution to the outcome that is perceived as positive by the user (“positive framing”). The second one is to add “semantic labeling”, that explains the directionality of each feature contribution (“this feature leads to +5% eligibility”), reducing additional cognitive processing steps. In a user study, participants evaluated the understandability of explanations for different framing and labeling conditions for loan applications and music recommendations. We found that positive framing improves understandability even when the prediction is negative. Additionally, adding semantic labels eliminates any framing effects on understandability, with positive labels outperforming negative labels. We implemented our suggestions in a package ArgueView[11].

Artificial intelligence is changing the world, especially the interaction between machines and humans. Learning and interpreting natural languages and responding have paved the way for many technologies and applications. The amalgam of machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing helped Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) to change the face of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). A conversational agent is an excellent example of conversational AI, which imitates the natural language. This article presents a sweeping overview of conversational agents that includes different techniques such as pattern-based, machine learning, and deep learning used to implement conversational agents. It also discusses the panorama of different tasks in conversational agents. This study also focuses on how conversational agents can simulate human behavior by adding emotions, sentiments, and affect to the context. With the advancements in recent trends and the rise in deep learning models, the authors review the deep learning techniques and various publicly available datasets used in conversational agents. This article unearths the research gaps in conversational agents and gives insights into future directions.

AI-Based Conversational Agents: A Scoping Review From Technologies to Future Directions

A novel automatic detection method for abnormal behavior of single fish using image fusion

Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have progressed enormously, which makes them able to learn complex data distributions in particular faces. More and more efficient GAN architectures have been designed and proposed to learn the different variations of faces, such as cross pose, age, expression, and style. These GAN-based approaches need to be reviewed, discussed, and categorized in terms of architectures, applications, and metrics. Several reviews that focus on the use and advances of GAN in general have been proposed. However, to the best of our knowledge, the GAN models applied to the face, which we call facial GANs, have never been addressed. In this article, we review facial GANs and their different applications. We mainly focus on architectures, problems, and performance evaluation with respect to each application and used datasets. More precisely, we review the progress of architectures and discuss the contributions and limits of each. Then, we expose the encountered problems of facial GANs and propose solutions to handle them. Additionally, as GAN evaluation has become a notable current defiance, we investigate the state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative evaluation metrics and their applications. We conclude this work with a discussion on the face generation challenges and propose open research issues.
