Since the year 2000, the up to 400 Volt Direct Current (400VDC) powering interface for Telecom and Datacenters equipment has been standardized and industrialized as it brings advantages. Compared to 48 Volt Direct Current power solutions, it uses much less copper and the energy losses in cable are lower. Compared to Alternating Current uninterrupted power supply (UPS) benefits are simplicity higher reliability and scalability with higher modular design. Now large implementations projects in thousands of Telecom networks sites and Megawatt datacenters are operated under 400VDC and acceleration of the use of this voltage interface requires solutions to simplify the migration towards 400V DC with progressive steps on many other sites. At the same time extended use is proposed for coupling renewable energy to the local DC power station and for remote powering of Telecom access network nodes. This paper will present the issues and the status of solutions found to accelerate the adoption of the 400V DC solutions in all these cases.

Telecom Operator's to accelerate the migration towards 400 volt direct current efficient powering for telecom/ICT equipment and coupling sites to smart energy microgrids

This chapter provides a review of factors driving technical development of broadband access networks, mostly toward higher bit rates and symmetrical services, together with a review of “fiber to the x” (FTTx) technologies for fixed access networks, including development and performance limitations of digital subscriber line (DSL) systems using twisted-pair copper cables, as well as fiber to the home systems. Characteristics and standardization of these systems are presented, together with a review of the two main competing broadband technologies: Data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) in coaxial cable TV networks and the 4G and 5G wireless networks. Additionally, a short list of recent developments in passive technologies (fibers, cables, and connectors) is included. Finally, the issues related to dismantling of the traditional copper telephone network and ensuring continuity of voice services in emergency situations are analyzed.

FTTx Access Networks: Technical Developments and Standardization

The communication infrastructure is facing an increasing demand for higher bandwidth with larger coverage, both for fixed line xDSL networks and for wireless equipment. Such expansions in bandwidth and coverage introduce higher demand for power at an increasing number of sites. This paper presents and discusses a proposal for how to meet the increasing bandwidth demand with a remote power concept for reduced CAPEX and/or reduced energy losses.
