This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Effect of Post-weld Heat Treatment on Joint Properties of Dissimilar Friction Stir Welded AA2024 and AA7075 Aluminum Alloys

In automotive industries, employing advanced high-strength steels such as dual-phase steels by taking advantage of high dynamic force absorption during car accidents and lightweight is one of the major challenges. In this regard, the effect of resistance spot welding parameters on the above great properties of advanced high-strength DP590 steel has been studied. In this study, the effect of optimized welding (spot resistance welding) on the weld microstructure was evaluated using optical microscopy as well as scanning electron microscope equipped with electron backscatter diffraction analysis (EBSD). Also, hardness profile along with the welding section was determined as mechanical property. The results showed that the welding practice has a significant influenced on the microstructure and microhardness of welded samples. The final microstructure of the nugget consisted of lath martensite, whereas in the HAZ, the microstructure was found to be mixture of coarse and fine martensite. The hardness profile was relevant to the above phase configuration. The phase variations along with different weld region were extensively characterized and discussed using EBSD technique.

Microstructure and Corrosion Behavior Investigation of Al5083-H321 GMAW Weldment in Sea Water

This paper investigates the idea of using Cu/CNT composite interlayer in the transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of Ti–6Al–4V/AISI 304 stainless steel. In this investigation, initially TLP was carried out using a pure copper interlayer at 900, 950 and 1000 °C with the holding time 60 min. The TLP joining was then carried out at 900 °C with Cu/CNT interlayer, with the CNT weight percent, ranging from 0 to 3%. CNT was deposited on Cu foils, using electrophoretic deposition technique. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated with optical/electron microscopes, microhardness, and shear tests. Results showed that the interface microstructure can be divided into athermal solidification zone, isothermal solidification zone, and diffusion affected zone. The phase structure and compositions in CNT-containing samples are relatively similar to TLP samples with pure Cu interlayer. Results showed that CNT addition has expanded the diffusion areas and facilitated the diffusion across the interface. CNT addition up to 3 wt. % resulted in a significant increase in hardness up 500 VHN. The increase in hardness in the joint area can be related to the presence of various intermetallic compounds at the TLP region. The correlations between mechanical properties and microstructure and the implications of CNTs for mechanical properties of the joints are discussed. 

Transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding of Ti-6Al-4V/AISI 304 stainless steel using Cu/CNT composite interlayer

The aim of this work was to characterize the microstructure-mechanical response relationships in UNS N08825/AISI 316L welds by means of electron backscatter diffraction analysis. Welding was conducted by ERNiCrMo-3 and ER308L filler wires. It was indicated that a significant increase in fractions of low Σ coincidence site lattice (CSL) boundaries occurred in UNS N08825 heat-affected zones (HAZs), whereas a small number of the boundaries formed in the AISI 316L HAZs and weld zones were of low ΣCSL types. Abnormal grain growth took place in the HAZs leading to changes in the initial texture components of the alloys. It was also demonstrated that the type of the used filler wire was a factor influencing the microtexture components formed within the HAZs. According to the results of mechanical tests, the weldment employing the ERNiCrMo-3 filler wire exhibited superior hardness, tensile strength, and elongation. Moreover, the occurrence of the abnormal grain growth in UNS N08825 HAZs had no negative effects on the tensile response of the weldments as a result of the activation of texture strengthening mechanism. Based on the obtained results, the ERNiCrMo-3 filler metal was recommended to fabricate the joint.
