Vibration and bending analysis of a sandwich microbeam with two integrated piezo-magnetic face-sheets

Vibration and electro-magneto-elastic bending analysis of a three-layer nanobeam with a nanocore and two piezomagnetic face sheets are studied in this paper. Timoshenko model of beam as well as nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic relations are used for analysis of this problem. The nanoface sheets are subjected to applied electric and magnetic potentials. The nanobeam rests on Winkler–Pasternak foundation. Electric and magnetic potentials are assumed as combination of linear function along the thickness direction that reflects applied electric and magnetic potentials and a cosine function that satisfies boundary conditions. Numerical results of this problem investigate the effect of some important parameters of nanobeam, such as nonlocal parameter, applied electric and magnetic potentials, and parameters of foundation on the vibration and magneto-electro-mechanical bending behaviors of the problem.

Size-dependent vibration and bending analyses of the piezomagnetic three-layer nanobeams

Piezoelectric bimorphs have been used as a micro-gripper in many applications, but the system might be complex and the response performance might not have been fully characterized. In this study the dynamic characteristics of bending piezoelectric bimorphs actuators were theoretically and experimentally investigated for micro-gripping applications in terms of deflection along the length, transient response, and frequency response with varying driving voltages and driving signals. In addition, the implementation of a parallel micro-gripper using bending piezoelectric bimorphs was presented. Both fingers were actuated separately to perform mini object handling. The bending piezoelectric bimorphs were fixed as cantilevers and individually driven using a high voltage amplifier and the bimorph deflection was measured using a non contact proximity sensor attached at the tip of one finger. The micro-gripper could perform precise micro-manipulation tasks and could handle objects down to 50 µm in size. This eliminates the need for external actuator extension of the microgripper as the grasping action was achieved directly with the piezoelectric bimorph, thus minimizing the weight and the complexity of the micro-gripper.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the thermal effects on the free vibration of functionally graded (FG) porous deep beams. Mechanical properties of the FG deep beam are temperature-dependent and vary across the height direction with different porosity models. The governing equations problem is obtained by using the Hamilton’s principle. In the solution of the problem, plane piecewise solid continua model and finite element method are used. The effects of porosity parameters, material distribution, porosity models and temperature rising on the vibration characteristics are presented and discussed with porosity effects for FG deep beams.

This paper provides a study of the bending behavior of a circularly curved functionally graded piezoelectric cantilever actuator under an applied electric load and heat conduction As a special case, the curved piezoelectric actuator is assumed to have graded property for the piezoelectric parameter g31 only in the thickness direction, which is expanded by Taylor series Based on the theory of linear piezoelectricity, the analytical formulations are developed by introducing the Airy stress function Numerical simulations are made to show the effects of material gradient and heat conduction on the bending behavior of the actuators It is found that the electroelastic field of the curved actuator is significantly influenced by the thermal load The results will be very helpful for the design and optimization of curved functionally graded piezoelectric actuators when these devices experience heat transfer

Thermal effect on the bending behavior of curved functionally graded piezoelectric actuators

In this work, the problem of a curved functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) actuator with sandwich structure under electrical and thermal loads is investigated The middle layer in the sandwich structure is functionally graded with the piezoelectric coefficient g31 varying continuously along the radial direction of the curved actuator Based on the theory of linear piezoelectricity, analytical solutions are obtained by using Airy stress function to examine the effects of material gradient and heat conduction on the performance of the curved actuator It is found that the material gradient and thermal load have significant influence on the electroelastic fields and the mechanical response of the curved FGP actuator Without the sacrifice of actuation deflection, smaller internal stresses are generated by using the sandwich actuator with functionally graded piezoelectric layer instead of the conventional bimorph actuator This work is very helpful for the design and application of curved piezoelectric actuators under thermal environment
