This tutorial provides an overview on large steam turbines systems and their auxiliaries in oil and gas applications from a Contractor perspective. The tutorial is introduced by discussing the basics of steam turbine systems including the thermodynamic background, principles of operation, and the different classifications of steam turbines. The steam turbine arrangements are discussed explaining the differences in casings and internals design and also the various possibilities of shaft line arrangements. Then all the auxiliary systems; and their sub-systems, that are associated with steam turbines are illustrated in details. Auxiliary systems presented in this tutorial comprise the vacuum system, the sealing system, the oil system, the speed control and protection system ...etc. among others. Particular issues such as plot plan constraints, precautions for offshore applications, human factors and safety are also addressed with explanations in this tutorial. And finally shop testing, installation, pre-commissioning and commissioning of large steam turbine systems are clarified.

The data required by turbine vendors to properly develop a design for a special purpose steam turbine are discussed in detail. Topics covered include discussion of continuous steam condi­ tions, turbine power ratings and sizing, speed ranges, efficiency definition and calculation, guarantees, and purchaser evaluation criteria. It will be pointed out how specification of additional data during the proposal phase can result in a turbine design which more closely matches the actual requirements of the project. Recommendations and proposals will be pointed out and then discussed in detail. INTRODUCTION The purpose herein is to try to define all of the design parameters that are required by a turbine designer during the proposal phase. The additional definitions proposed will augment the data usually found in customer specifications and API 612 data sheets. Where definitions in API 612 and NEMA SM-23 are not clear or are nonexistent, definitions are proposed that meet the unwritten intent of these documents. It will be demonstrated how a little bit of extra work during the specification of special purpose steam turbines can result in more consistent turbine proposals from different vendors and turbine designs which more closely match all the project requirements. The turbine designer has many parameters to consider during the proposal design. The ones that have the most significant effect on the final design will be discussed in detail.

Changing markets, industry demands for increased efficiency and long term operation, and availability of new technology have all contributed in development of more efficient and reliable turbomachines. The authors present ethylene plants trends, demonstrate the challenges faced by the turbomachinery equipment manufacturers and highlight various advancements in the turbomachinery technology. History maps are introduced for design advancements, verification tests, and application results in terms of transient fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, rotor dynamics, and blade vibration strength evaluation. In addition, after recognizing the need for long term operation and related typical damage and deterioration modes, the authors explain various practical technologies (such as effective on-line washing, flow path surface treatment, combination of anti-corrosion and erosion prevention, stage performance enhancement by partial component replacement, NDE techniques for both compressors and steam turbines, and a unique casing replacement technique on the same footprint for increasing capacity) used to provide more efficient and reliable machines.

Technical Challenges for Compressors and Steam Turbines for Efficient and Sustainable Operation in Mega Ethylene Plants

The reliability of a steam turboset is dependent, among other things, on correct fimctioning of its hydraulic lubrication and control system. An essential requirement is a reliable oil supply over the whole operating range. The main oil pump carries to a large degree this responsibility. The design and operational aspects of it will be dealt with in this paper. Air dispersed in oil is known to endanger, in extreme cases, the safe and reliable operation of the turbogroup. Besides operating interferences of various system components an interruption of oil supply to the bearings may result in serious consequences. Without going into details of oil qualities, oper125 ational consequences as well as corrective measures, of air present in oil will be discussed. The increasing specific demands imposed upon steam turbines may bring about new oil system difficulties. The subject matter presented here treats extreme cases of thermal loading of the lube oil as in the case when coming into contact with hot turbine parts. The resulting coke deposits in bearings may cause failure. With the assistance of experimental comparison tests lube oils on this basis are selected that will have the inherent capabilities to withstand such extreme operating conditions.
