Secure data aggregation methods and countermeasures against various attacks in wireless sensor networks: A comprehensive review

The growth of Internet of Things (IoT) took center stage universally due their capability to advance the course of human lives. Consequent upon this, several challenges were thrown up such as security of huge data stored and transmitted through network communication channels. IoT insecurity is partly due to centralization architecture, low computational strength, resource-constrained devices, variation in standards and protocols of communication. From this Systematic Literature Review (SLR), the 85 articles reviewed showed that privacy and security solutions are still being proposed or at conceptual levels, though a number of researchers favored the integration of Blockchain technology, cryptographic and hashing schemes into IoT. The Blockchain technology in IoT systems remains an open area of interest for top researchers especially in evolving frameworks to fit into the centralized architecture, functionality, and scalability demands of conventional IoT systems. In this article, we investigate security and privacy concerns of IoT from the lens of current trends, pertinent challenges, security methodologies, applications, and gaps for future research directions. Most specifically, there is prospect of utilizing cryptographic and hashing schemes offered by Blockchain technology in IoT. Then, high performance and scalable cryptographic schemes (that is, those in the class of lightweight appraoch) are suggested to deal with privacy and security of data in Blockchain-based IoT system. More importantly, this study provides basis for evolving secure and decentralized applications and systems in several domains such as smart farming.

بدأت الجهود في تصميم وتطوير التشفير الخفيف (LWC) قبل عقد من الزمن. تشير العديد من الدراسات العلمية في الأدب إلى تحسين خوارزميات التشفير التقليدية وتطوير خوارزميات جديدة. أدى هذا العدد الكبير من الدراسات إلى ظهور العديد من دراسات المراجعة حول LWC في إنترنت الأشياء. نظرا للعدد الكبير من دراسات المراجعة حول LWC في إنترنت الأشياء ، فمن غير المعروف ما تغطيه الدراسات ومدى شمول دراسات المراجعة. لذلك ، هدفت هذه المقالة إلى سد الفجوة في دراسات المراجعة من خلال إجراء دراسة نطاق منهجية. تم تحليل مقالات المراجعة الحالية حول LWC في إنترنت الأشياء لاكتشاف مدى اتساع المراجعات والمواضيع التي تمت تغطيتها. اقترحت نتائج الدراسة أن العديد من دراسات المراجعة تم تصنيفها على أنها نظرة عامة على أنواع المراجعة التي تركز على LWC العام. علاوة على ذلك ، ركزت موضوعات المراجعات بشكل أساسي على تشفير الكتلة المتماثلة ، بينما تم العثور على مراجعات محدودة على المفتاح غير المتماثل والتجزئة في LWC. كشفت نتائج هذه الدراسة أن المراجعات في LWC في إنترنت الأشياء لا تزال في مرحلتها المبكرة ويتم تشجيع الباحثين على الاستكشاف من خلال إجراء دراسات المراجعة في المناطق الأقل حضورا. يعتبر إجراء مراجعة شاملة للدراسات التي تغطي هذين الموضوعين ضروريا لإنشاء توازن بين الأعمال العلمية في LWC من أجل إنترنت الأشياء وتشجيع المزيد من البحث التجريبي في المنطقة.

A Scoping Study on Lightweight Cryptography Reviews in IoT

A large number of sensors and intelligent devices are interconnected via the internet to collect data as part of the internet of things (IoT) applications. Data security is one of the important challenges for these applications due to vulnerability of the internet. IoT devices limiting factors, such as delay-sensitivity, restricted memory, and low computing capability, make choosing the appropriate data encryption standard extremely important. The current research focuses on evaluating four data security, block cipher standards for the IoT smart home application. Considering the encryption/decryption speed, DES, TDES, AES, and SAFER+ standards are evaluated by implementing the algorithms with MATLAB to determine the best security solution. The simulation of the four standards shows the superiority of SAFER+ standard in term of encryption speed compared to others added to its capabilities on security, and software implementation opportunity. The use of classical symmetric key standards for real time data security in the IoT application can be validated through the selection of SAFER+.

The idea of the Internet of Things (IoT) is to connect or give access to everything to the Internet. IoT environment not only provides the facility of Human to Machine connectivity, however, it also creates Machine to Machine connectivity. As everything is going to connect to the Internet and also generating the data. So, the data generating by these devices is growing up rapidly, that huge amount of data is called Big Data. This data has huge Volume, High Velocity, and different Variety. The security of this data is a risk. As we know that, the IoT devices have constraints like low power and less computational speed and the traditional encryption algorithms like DES, 3DES, and AES are more complex. Traditional encryption algorithm seems not feasible for IoT devices. So, we need to develop Lightweight encryption algorithm for IoT devices for secure communication and secure data transmission in IoT environment. Cryptography and Steganography techniques are used for securing the data over the Internet. Cryptography encrypts the data by using a key and make a ciphertext that cannot be readable by the normal user. Steganography hides the data by concealing it into another medium like data, image, audio, video, or mixed. This paper provides a review of important lightweight cryptographic techniques used for IoT devices.
