This paper presents the use of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology for rapid manufacturing a discone antenna. The advanced 3D printing technology can provide antenna prototypes rapidly manufactured in comparable time frames as conventional antenna prototypes. Here, the 3D printing technology is applied to manufacture the cone part of proposed discone antenna based on polylactic-acid (PLA) material, while the disc part is realized using a copper metal sheet. The proposed discone antenna which is intended as an electromagnetic interference (EMI) sensor is designed to produce a wideband frequency response of 700 MHz - 6000 MHz. The characterization result shows that the manufactured discone antenna has the operating bandwidth for -10 dB reflection coefficient of more than 5300 MHz with the lowest operating frequency of 698 MHz. 

3D Printing Technology for Rapid Manufacturing Discone Antenna Based on PLA Material

Despite its inherent drawbacks, microstrip patch antenna is the most popular antenna type widely used in many fields including Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) sensor application. This paper deals with the characteristic improvement and realization of a dome-shaped patch antenna applied as EMI sensor. The proposed antenna, which basically has two main parts, namely dome part and lower part, is designed on two layers of dielectric substrate with the dimension of 75 mm × 80 mm, and fed by a method of proximity coupled feeding to improve the radiation characteristic. Some investigations emphasized on two main parts of the antenna are carried out to obtain an optimum performance on its radiation characteristic prior the realization. From the measurement, it shows that the proposed antenna is satisfiable the specified requirements by EMI sensor application, whereby the –10 dB bandwidth response achieves 100 MHz (4.225 GHz – 4.325 GHz) in the operating frequency of 4.25 GHz.

Microstrip antenna is a popular planar antenna which is used in wide applications, including for EMI wireless sensor. It has small form factor and can be made from unique shapes. This paper presents an investigation of a dome-shape patch antenna for EMI wireless sensor purpose. It has two main structures which are the dome structure and the lower part structure. Some simulations have done to verify this antenna design performance such as its return loss, gain, and radiation pattern. It shows that the dome size contributes to the antenna frequency center while the lower part affects the return loss and bandwidth of the antenna. The antenna has been deformed into three forms to investigate its performance when it is worn by user. Overall, the deformation simulation results indicate there is no significant change regarding the initial design.
