Research Design: Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Method Approaches

The construction industry plays significant roles in the country's economic development and growth There would be a domino impact on the economy if any construction projects are being delayed As the pandemic of COVID-19 had arisen into our global that had affected the construction industry, including building projects Identifying the underlying problems caused by COVID-19 can provide the best solution to reduce the pandemic's impact Consequently, emphasizing the impact of COVID-19 and the strategies to address those problems in the building construction industry becomes vital Thus, this research objective is to identify problems caused by COVID-19 in the building construction industry and mechanisms to reduce COVID-19's negative impact The data collection involved individual interviews with 20 contractor companies that are engaged in building construction projects Then, the data is analyzed using the thematic analysis approach The findings show that COVID-19 is causing operational and financial issues, while financial aids and complete information is needed to overcome those impacts These findings will help policymakers improve existing strategic plans and create new policies to cope with the circumstances caused by COVID-19 among building construction organizations © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd

Effect of COVID-19 on building construction projects: Impact and response mechanisms

This article analyzes the contribution of certifiable environmental management standards—such as ISO 14001 and the Eco‐Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS)—to corporate environmental performance. Based on a content analysis of 414 third‐party‐verified environmental statements from EMAS‐registered Spanish organizations, which included information for around 6,700 detailed indicators, a weak improvement in environmental performance was found. Less than half of the analyzed indicators—namely, 48.27%—revealed a net improvement. Similarly, analysis of the justifications of the registered companies for the lack of improvement points to a rather symbolical adoption of the certification, intended to do only the bare minimum. These findings call into question the prevailing opinion about the positive impact of voluntary certifiable environmental management standards on environmental greening. Implications for managers and public policy makers, as well as for other stakeholders, are discussed.

Environmental management certification and environmental performance: Greening or greenwashing?

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the interrelationships between COVID-19 pandemic impact and architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) organizations. To achieve that aim, the objectives are to: identify the critical pandemic impact (CPI) of COVID-19 on AEC organizations;compare the CPI between the different organization characteristics;and analyze the interrelationships between the CPI. Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review of 519 articles and in-depth interviews with 40 AEC practitioners were carried out, yielding 12 COVID-19 impacts. Then, data on the 12 impact’s criticality were collected through a survey among AEC practitioners. In total, 127 valid responses were received and analyzed using mean ranking analysis, analysis of variance and Spearman’s correlation. The findings were also compared with pandemic impacts from prior works. Findings: Five CPI exist among the 12 impacts, namely, “reduced construction productivity,” “reduced foreign investment in the construction industry,” “reduced demand on construction-related works,” “disruption in the supply chain” and “reduced number of public projects.” “Reduced foreign investment in the construction industry” and “reduced demand on construction-related works” significantly impact small-medium enterprises than large enterprises. Also, “disruption in the supply chain” and “reduced construction productivity” are recurring impacts in all countries compared. Finally, moderate relationships exist between “reduced foreign investment in the construction industry” and “reduced demand on construction-related works” and “disruption in the supply chain” and “reduced construction productivity.” Originality/value: The findings can be used to prioritize available resources in developing short-term responses for COVID-19. Also, action plans can be developed to mitigate the CPI from recurring. © 2021, Emerald Publishing Limited.

Critical analysis of pandemic impact on AEC organizations: the COVID-19 case

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in both the manufacturing and service sectors have been viewed as an important driving force behind the rapid economic growth in China. There are multiple factors that drive the success of SMEs. In this paper, we study the effect of innovation culture, technological capability, and organization size on the performance of SMEs in China. We hypothesize that firm performance is positively affected by each of these factors. We use data from 1124 SMEs in China and apply regression analysis to test our hypotheses. We find that technological capability and organization size have a statistically positive effect on the performance of SMEs. Because manufacturing and service industries have distinct characteristics, we also compare the effects of these factors on firm performance within these industries. We find that technological capability is positively and statistically significantly related to firm performance in the manufacturing industry but not in the service industry, while innovation culture is positively and statistically significantly related to firm performance in the service industry but not in the manufacturing industry.

The Covid-19 is a pandemic issue that is causing widespread global disruption forcing lockdowns in many countries including Malaysia as an effort in disconnecting the virus from spreading As an initiative, the Malaysia government has call for the Movement Control Order (MCO) as one of the lockdown alternatives starting on 18th March 2020 Due to that, the MCO has given a huge impact on Malaysia’s industries including the construction industry Hence, to successfully deliver projects, time and cost become the essential component which in this current scenario, most of the on-going projects declined to deliver the project according to the time and cost as planned Thus, this paper intends to explore the consequences of the Movement Control Order (MCO) towards project success In getting an authentic data and fast feedback from the respondents during this current scenario, uses alternate methods as face to face interview is not encouraged The interview sessions were held thru telephone conversation with 8 contractors in Klang Valley and Penang which randomly selected based on contractor listing in Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) website and content analysis are used to figure out the main consequences using Nvivo software Results from the interviews found that the MCO has resulted in 6 main impacts consists of (1) regulation compliance;(2) safety;(3) additional time for project delivery;(4) increase in development cost;(5) limited human resources supplies;and (6) limited resource availability on-site These shows the MCO has given the negative impact to the project success This result is important for the government to ensure their awareness on the consequences of the MCO towards construction industry and facilitate the construction players to overcome the six factors mentioned in this paper © 2020 ASTES Publishers All rights reserved

Covid-19 pandemic lockdown: The consequences towards project success in malaysian construction industry

Highways greatly contribute to a country’s economic development and growth. Therefore, it is vital for highway construction projects to complete on time and budget. However, when a project starts construction prematurely, projects frequently experience interruption that eventually resulted in delays, causing a multitude of adverse effects on all project stakeholders. In other words, premature starts are one of the factors of construction delays. However, prior studies have little understanding of information that can help practitioners determine whether a highway project is premature or ready for construction. This study aims to identify the parameters used in practice to differentiate whether a highway construction project is ready or not to begin construction. To achieve this objective, interviews with sixteen industry practitioners working on highway construction projects are being conducted and analyzed. The significant findings include: (1) construction readiness can be assessed even as early as during the project start-up phase; and (2) not fulfilling the construction readiness parameters may cause a work stoppage, inefficient work, rework, and shortages in labor, equipment or materials. This study contributes to the current body of knowledge by identifying the parameters that indicate whether a highway project is construction-ready or construction-not-ready. The lessons from this study could help the industry to avoid premature starts in highway construction projects.

Construction readiness parameters for highway projects

The construction industry is one of the most significant sectors in Malaysia, specifically in terms of its contribution to the Malaysian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and facilitation of other industries to enhance their productivity outcome by constructing buildings and facilities for them. However, the process of constructing buildings and facilities will take a long period of time if done according to conventional practices. Due to this circumstance, the establishment of the Internet of Things (IoT) in construction development is beneficial to improve productivity levels and reduce the construction time as well as the cost. Hence, this paper intends to review the adoption of IoT in Malaysia’s construction industry towards Construction 4.0. In conjunction with that, the use of IoT in terms of construction technology such as BIM, smart communication, sensor, big data, augmented reality, location services and remote operation during the construction process has made a massive impact on the monitoring of the construction process, especially in reducing the risk of construction error, defects, and avoiding construction delay. The proper adoption of IoT in the Malaysian construction industry will give a huge positive impact to the construction industry and encourage it to grow and compete with other developing countries. This paper is noteworthy to the Malaysian construction industry, especially for the key players in the construction industry to raise their awareness regarding the benefits of adopting IoT for their future projects.

The Adoption of IOT in the Malaysian Construction Industry: Towards Construction 4.0

Building information modeling (BIM) is an emerging approach to managing the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of projects. However, the lack of organizational BIM capabilities prevents BIM from being generally adopted across the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. Therefore, AEC organizations must develop strategic plans to support BIM implementation and ensure that the anticipated benefits of BIM are realized. This study identifies the underlying factors and strategies related to organizational BIM capabilities and develops a structural equation model to establish their causal relationships. A systematic literature review of 26 articles and semi-structured interviews with BIM practitioners provided 19 factors and 14 strategies. A total of 121 BIM practitioners evaluated the criticality of the factors and strategies through a survey. The collected data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and partial least-squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The factor analysis classified the factors into two groups (organizational BIM capabilities and organizational capabilities) and strategies into three groups (capability requirement, organizational culture, and organizational competitiveness). The structural equation model revealed that organizational culture positively affects both organizational and BIM capabilities. Moreover, organizational competitiveness is shown to positively influence organizational capabilities. These results provide evidence for the development of strategies for implementing BIM. Practitioners may use these strategies to develop strategic plans and prioritize efforts in a more effective manner. With the findings of this research, users will have a better understanding of the relationships between factors and strategies that are associated with organizational BIM capabilities.
