A process and apparatus for the dehumidification and VOC odor remediation of an air stream withdrawn from the passenger compartment of a transportation vehicle is disclosed which employs a continuously rotating wheel support and adsorbent selective for the adsorption of water and VOCs. The wheel is coated with a zeolite adsorbent selected from the low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-84, a rare earth exchanged zeolite LZ-210, a low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-64, and mixtures thereof. It was discovered that faujasites which have a zeolite structure including β-cages within which are located tri-valent cations exhibit a Type 1M adsorption isotherm for water which provides a good driving force for adsorption at low partial pressures and a heat of adsorption which is slightly greater than the heat of vaporization/condensation of water. A surprisingly significant increase in the thermal efficiency is possible as a result of the lower regeneration temperature of the adsorbent and the use of novel process steps.

An improved method and apparatus for indirect evaporative cooling of a fluid stream to substantially its dew temperature. Plate heat exchanger has perforations (11) and channels (3, 4 and 5) for gas or a low temperature for liquids on a dry side and wet side. Fluid streams (1) flow across the dry side (9), transferring heat to the plate. Gas stream (2) flows across the dry side and through perforations to channels (5) on wet side (10), which it then cools by evaporative cooling as well as conductive and radiative transfer of heat from plate. A wicking material provides wetting of wet side. In other embodiments, a desiccant wheel may be used to dehumidify the gas, air streams may be recirculated, feeder wicks (13) and a pump may be used to bring water form a water reservoir, and fans may be used either force or induce a draft.

Method and plate apparatus for dew point evaporative cooler

There is provided a system for pumping thermal energy. The system includes (a) a membrane permeator for removing vapor from a process gas and for providing a vapor-depleted process gas, and (b) a gas-liquid contactor for adding vapor from a liquid to a vapor-depleted gas to produce a vapor-added process gas. The system transfers a quantity of thermal energy from the liquid to the vapor-added process gas, and is also capable of upgrading the thermal energy to a higher temperature. The system may be used for various heat pump applications including chilling and waste heat or low level heat recovery.

Membrane desiccation heat pump

An energy conversion system including a high efficiency absorption heat pump cycle is disclosed using a high pressure stage, a supercritical cooling stage, and a mechanical energy extraction stage to provide a non-toxic combined heat, cooling, and energy system. Using the preferred carbon dioxide gas with partially miscible absorber fluids, including the preferred ionic liquids as the working fluid in the system, the present invention desorbs the CO.sub.2 from an absorbent and cools the gas in the supercritical state to deliver heat. The cooled CO.sub.2 gas is then expanded, preferably through an expansion device transforming the expansion energy into mechanical energy thereby providing cooling, heating temperature lift and electrical energy, and is returned to an absorber for further cycling. Strategic use of heat exchangers, preferably microchannel heat exchangers comprised of nanoscale powders and thermal-hydraulic compressor / pump can further increase the efficiency and performance of the system.

High efficiency absorption heat pump and methods of use

Aspects of the disclosure generally provide a heat engine system and a method for regulating a pressure and an amount of a working fluid in a working fluid circuit during a thermodynamic cycle. A mass management system may be employed to regulate the working fluid circulating throughout the working fluid circuit. The mass management systems may have a mass control tank fluidly coupled to the working fluid circuit at one or more strategically-located tie-in points. A heat exchanger coil may be used in conjunction with the mass control tank to regulate the temperature of the fluid within the mass control tank, and thereby determine whether working fluid is either extracted from or injected into the working fluid circuit. Regulating the pressure and amount of working fluid in the working fluid circuit selectively increases or decreases the suction pressure of the pump to increase system efficiency.

Heat Engine and Heat to Electricity Systems and Methods with Working Fluid Mass Management Control

A method and apparatus provides conditioning of an air stream by cooling in a regenerative heat exchanger having two groups of channels separated from one another by walls through which heat exchange occurs. The air stream to be conditioned flows through one group of channels while an auxiliary air stream flows through a second group of channels the walls of which comprise wettable material maintained wet by means of water which is caused to evaporate by the auxiliary air stream to result in cooling. The wettable material provides a substantially stationary liquid layer maintained in the channels of auxiliary air flow so that evaporation takes place directly from the walls separating the two groups of channels to obtain high heat exchange efficiency. The wettable material may be wick-like absorbing material layers which eliminate the requirement of continuously flowing large quantities of water so that the evaporative surfaces may be rewetted intermittently and kept wet over a period of time prior to subsequent rewetting. This is accomplished by providing an excess amount of water. In addition, intensive rinsing of the evaporative surfaces may take place to remove dust particles and mineral deposits occurring in the water. The auxiliary air stream may be split off from the stream of air to be conditioned before and/or after the air stream has been conditioned by cooling to provide greater efficiency.

A method and apparatus for transferring energy in an absorption system according to the heat pump principle to improve the cycle efficiency thereof, in which the selected working medium is vaporized in an evaporator by heat exchange with heat source of ambient pressure and passed into a sorption station where it is brought into contact with an absorbent solution with consequent release of heat of absorption and heat of condensation. The mixture of absorbent solution and absorbed working medium is passed from the sorption station into a pressurized separating station, where the absorbent is separated from the working medium by diffusing the mixture under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane defining a zone of relatively high pressure and a zone of relatively low pressure higher than the ambient pressure, the concentrated absorbent solution being collected in the high pressure zone and the solution of working medium being received in the low pressure zone by virtue of the resultant reverse osmotic flow. The dilute solution of working medium is passed to the evaporator upon being depressurized, while the concentrated absorbent solution, upon being reduced to the ambient pressure, is passed into the sorption station.
