Analysis on mechanical properties of AA6061/Rice husk ash composites produced through stir casting technique

Silver nanoparticles have been a recent focus of many researchers in dentistry, and their potential uses and benefits have drawn attention in dentistry and medicine. The fabrication and utilization of nanoscale substances and structures are at the core of the rapidly developing areas of nanotechnology. They are often used in the dental industry because they prevent bacteria from making nanoparticles, oxides, and biofilms. They also stop the metabolism of bacteria. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are a type of zero-dimensional material with different shapes. Dentistry has to keep up with changing patient needs and new technology. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be used in dentistry for disinfection and preventing infections in the oral cavity. One of the most interesting metallic nanoparticles used in biomedical applications is silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The dental field has found promising uses for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the elimination of plaque and tartar, as well as the elimination of bacterial and fungal infections in the mouth. The incorporation of AgNPs into dental materials has been shown to significantly enhance patients’ oral health, leading to their widespread use. This review focuses on AgNP synthesis, chemical properties, biocompatibility, uses in various dental fields, and biomaterials used in dentistry. With an emphasis on aspects related to the inclusion of silver nanoparticles, this descriptive review paper also intends to address the recent developments of AgNPs in dentistry.

Silver Nanoparticles in Dental Applications: A Descriptive Review

Using stir-casting, the hybrid aluminium metal matrix composites are prepared with the reinforcement of SiC and graphite particulates by varying equally 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight. The wear and frictional force for the prepared specimens were investigated through pin on disc wear testing machine. Exercising ANOVA technique, the wear rate and coefficient of friction was accomplished with the impact of applied load, sliding speed and sliding distance. Using Taguchi technique, experiments have been performed depending on the design of experiments. For analysis of data L9 Orthogonal array was preferred. Wear resistance and frictional force were influenced majorly with the reinforcement of graphite. The morphology of the depleted surfaces and the wear fragments were analysed to recognize the wear property. Distinguished to other percentages of reinforcements, 6% wt. of SiC and 6% wt. of graphite has demonstrated high wear resistance.

Study of Tribological Behaviour of AA6351/SiC/Gr Hybrid Metal Matrix Composite using Taguchi Technique

Background: Poly (Methyl methacrylic acid) based materials are widely used for the fabrication of removable complete and partial denture prosthesis. Regular cleansing of these dentures may abrade the surface due to an inherent lack of adequate surface hardness. This roughness may adhere food to the denture surface, making it dirty and further cause stomatitis. Recently, antimicrobial activity of denture base materials incorporated with silver nanoparticles was studied, that may logically prevent microbial growth on the denture. However, the effect of these nanoparticles on the mechanical properties, which provide longevity to the prosthesis, was not substantiated.
 Aim: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of incorporating various concentrations of silver nanoparticles into heat-cure denture base resin materials, on their surface hardness.
 Materials and methods: Silver nanoparticles were incorporated at various concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 5.0 wt%) into three different heat-cure denture base materials. A total of 150 rectangular-shaped specimens (62 x 10 x 2.5), which comprises 50 samples from each of the three heat-cure acrylic resins were made using the compression moulding technique. Ten specimens (n=10) were allocated for each concentration such as control, 0.5wt%, 1.0wt%, 2.0wt% and 5.0wt% concentrations of silver nanoparticles. The microhardness was evaluated using the Vickers micro-hardness tester. The data were subjected to One way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests for statistical analyses.
Results: Significant differences (p=0.000) were observed between the unmodified and modified denture base materials.
 Conclusion: Silver nanoparticles can be considered as the favourable additives to increase the surface hardness of denture base materials.
