Synopsis Immigration and social integration are gendered issues In this article, we concentrate on women's immigration from the Maghreb to France, and explore what we term “Maghrebi Feminism” We discuss the specific historical context of three waves of Maghrebi migration to France after WWII, analyze the women's positioning within French/European Islamization trends, and elaborate the different experiences of male and female migrants in France The Maghrebi female migrants' dilemmas are then presented as the outcome of these circumstances In the second part, we review the political and welfare issues that Maghrebi female migrants face Through their struggles regarding education, occupation, health services and political representation, we conclude that Maghrebi female migrants are social agents who gain more and fare better than their male counterparts when migrating to France, but pay a crucial price to traditional family and community life Methodologically, we employ quantitative tools of analysis as developed within micro political research

Resume En France, les etudes sur la delinquance des adolescents issus de l'immigration portent le plus souvent sur les facteurs socioculturels, en termes de facteurs de risque, qui ont en fin de compte une faible valeur explicative. L'etude presentee ici explore la perception qu'ont les adolescents issus de l'immigration maghrebine de premiere generation, de leur appartenance culturelle, de leur identite et de l'education parentale, a partir des modeles en interculturel developpes par de Berry (1989) et Franchi (1999). Nous avons compare l'expression de ces trois dimensions dans deux groupes d'adolescents issus de l'immigration maghrebine de premiere generation : un groupe de 30 delinquants (judiciarises) et un groupe de 30 de non delinquants, tous de meme origine socioculturelle et habitant la meme banlieue. Les resultats mettent en evidence des differences marquees dans les orientations culturelles, avec chez les non-delinquants une preference pour le biculturalisme mais de maniere harmonieuse par rapport a leur sentiment identitaire, contrairement aux delinquants qui valorisent plutot la culture francaise mais presentent une dissonance entre leur orientation culturelle et leur sentiment d'identite. Des differences considerables apparaissent aussi dans les perceptions qu'ont ces adolescents de l'attitude des parents a leur egard.

Perception de soi, de l'appartenance culturelle et de l'éducation parentale chez des adolescents délinquants issus de l'immigration maghrébine

In France, youth delinquency usually is studied from the point of view of socio-demographical characteristics, in terms of risk factors, which are not of an explanatory nature. In this study we explore the perception of cultural affiliation, identity and parental education by first generation adolescents of North African immigration, following the intercultural models developed by Berry (1989) and Franchi (1999). We compare these perceptions in two groups of first generation adolescents with the same sociocultural background and suburbian environment: 30 delinquents and 30 non delinquents. Results indicate that cultural attitudes differ significantly in the two groups: non delinquents are bi-culturally oriented (integration), attached to their family culture (separation) and define their identity as being both North African and French. In contrast, delinquent adolescents favour the French culture (assimilation) but define themselves as foreigners and North Africans. This internal dissonance could be at the root of an intrapsychic conflict and contribute to producing maladjusted behaviours. Important differences also are shown in the perceptions by the adolescents of parental education. © 2007 Elsevier Masson SAS. Tous droits reserves.
