Chronic non-healing wounds show delayed and incomplete healing processes and in turn expose patients to a high risk of infection. Treatment currently focuses on dressings that prevent microbial infiltration and keep a balanced moisture and gas exchange environment. Antibacterial delivery from dressings has existed for some time, with responsive systems now aiming to trigger release only if infection occurs. Simultaneously, approaches that stimulate cell proliferation in the wound and encourage healing have been developed. Interestingly, few dressings appear capable of simultaneously impairing or treating infection and encouraging cell proliferation/wound healing. Electrospinning is a simple, cost-effective, and reproducible process that can utilize both synthetic and natural polymers to address these specific wound challenges. Electrospun meshes provide high-surface area, micro-porosity, and the ability to load drugs or other biomolecules into the fibers. Electrospun materials have been used as scaffolds for tissue engineering for a number of years, but there is surprisingly little literature on the interactions of fibers with bacteria and co-cultures of cells and bacteria. This Review examines the literature and data available on electrospun wound dressings and the research that is required to develop smart multifunctional wound dressings capable of treating infection and healing chronic wounds.

Electrospun Nanofibers as Dressings for Chronic Wound Care: Advances, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Compared with free enzymes, immobilized enzymes are more robust and resistant to environmental changes. In addition, with enhanced stability, immobilized enzymes can be separated from the reaction mixture and used for repeated cycles. These advantages prompt their applications in various fields. This review outlines the existing methods and easy separated support materials for enzymes immobilization. After a brief introduction on the immobilized enzyme, the immobilization methods of adsorption, entrapment, covalent attachment and cross-linking are discussed. The emphasis is given on the easy separated support materials of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), membranes and capillary columns. An outlook on the immobilized enzyme is given at last.

Advances on methods and easy separated support materials for enzymes immobilization

Immobilized enzymes are widely used for variety of applications. Based on the type of application, the method of immobilization and support material can be selected. The immobilized enzymes can be separated from the reaction mixture and reused and also immobilized in order to prevent the enzyme from being exposed to harsh conditions, high temperature, surfactants, and oxidizing agents etc. the immobilized enzymes are also widely used in food industry, pharmaceutical industry, bioremediation, detergent industry, textile industry, etc. Enzyme immobilization improves the operational stability and is also due to the increased enzyme loading which causes the controlled diffusion. Several hundreds of enzymes are immobilized and used for various large scale industries. A Review on Methods, Application and Properties of Immobilized Enzyme

Received 1 April 2011; revised received and accepted 7 June 2011 The nanocomposite web of calcium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol with varying proportion has been prepared by electrospinning and its application for wound healing is examined. Scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy have been used to characterize the morphology and molecular fingerprint. The water vapour transmission rate of the blended nanofibre composite web having maximum calcium alginate content is found to be 2725.8 g/m 2 /2h, which helps in maintaining a moist environment over the wound surface. The wound healing capacity of the nanofibre has been evaluated using a rat model. When the wound is covered with nanofibre, it forms gel due to the presence of calcium alginate and filled with new epithelium without any harmful reactions.
