Artvin province located in north-east region of Turkey is small province but has rich plant diversity due to its different geographical and ecological formation. Significant part of this province has been flooded by the dams which have been built. The common bean is a very important crop for Artvin’s farmers. This study was carried out with the aim of determining and preserving the characteristics of domestic bean varieties grown in Artvin. Common bean seeds were collected from 279 locations in 74 villages in seven districts of the province. These seeds were allocated to 400 sample groups according to their shapes and colors. Eleven monocolored and 21 dicolored or polycolored seed groups were determined. Majority of the seed were subcompressus type seeds. The samples in the 1st group were ranked first in terms of size index. Considering the 100 seed weight, 64.68% of the population was found between 25 to 40 g; 30.69% of the population was higher than 40 g. By the advantage of having big variation of all characters, landraces of bean varieties grown in Artvin Province have a rich genetic source that can be used in breeding programs. Previous studies, using phaseolin seed protein as a molecular marker, have revealed four groups (T, Ca, C and S) of Bulgarian common bean accessions (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). The present study examines seed-coat colour diversity of 292 P. vulgaris accessions and the relation between phaseolin type and seed-coat colour. A previous study focused on phaseolin type and the present study adds an analysis of seed-coat colours and patterns and their relationships. The results identify subgroups within the major Andean and Mesoamerican genetic groups. Seed-coat colour and pattern comparisons by accessions, complemented with biochemical data, increase the discriminating power of genetic diversity analyses.

Genetic diversity of bulgarian phaseolus vulgaris L. based on phaseolin type and seed-coat colour

to 25% of essential proteins in the human diet are provided by beans which are complementary to other food sources such as rice and maize. Phaseolin is the major protein in bean seed and has provided evidence for studies of protein diversity. Phaseolin has been especially used for dividing Phaseolus vulgaris in to two major gene pools: the Andean (T-type) and Mesoamerican (S-type) groups. In the present study, 23 Iranian accessions from National Research Station of Kermanshah city and Active Gene Bank of Tehran University and 22 commercial genotypes obtained from National Research Station of Khomein city and CIAT were randomly chosen to determine the phaseolin type by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The traits of the seeds such as seed length, seed width, seed flattening (determined by J coefficient and H coefficient) and total protein content were evaluated. The J coefficient was estimated by the ratio between the seed length and width and the H by the ratio between the seed thickness and width. Our results showed that genotypes of common bean were from both gene pools (Andes and Central America) with both 'T' (37.77 %) and 'S' (22.22 %) phaseolin types. The 100-seed weight was the main character that grouped these gene pools. Genotypes Naz, KS21537 and KS21456 showed high values of protein content. By comparison of means used in this study, it would be possible to identify the best genotypes to compose a worthwhile source of genetic diversity to apply in the future breeding programs.
