An in-line connector for joining two bundles of optical waveguides. The end portions of the fibers of the first and second bundles are respectively disposed in apertures in first and second ferrules. The aperture shapes and dimensions are such that the fibers of each bundle are retained in a close packed array whereby the centers of the ends of any three contiguous fibers of a bundle are disposed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle. The two ferrules are fastened together in such a manner that the peripheries of the apertures are contiguous, thereby causing the alignment of each fiber of one bundle with a corresponding fiber of the other bundle.

An opto-acoustic hydrophone converting acoustic signals to corresponding modulated optical signals and transmitting the converted signals via a fiber optics cable to a remote location. The acoustic signal is first converted to an electrical signal prior to converting it to an optical type.

Opto-acoustic hydrophone

A method comprising alternately winding in one direction around the bobbin (34) compact (30) and crossover (52) layers. Each compact layer extends axially of the bobbin from a start end (36) proximate one end (38) of the bobbin to a finish end (40) proximate the other end (42) of the bobbin and includes a plurality of fiber turns (44) in virtual axial contact with each other which define generally parallel grooves (46) in the surface of the compact layer. The turn defining the start and finish ends of each compact layer is aligned with a respective start and finish set-back groove in the surface of the immediately preceding compact layer axially spaced from the respective start and finish ends of the preceding compact layer. Each crossover layer extends axially of the bobbin from the finish end of the preceding compact layer to proximate the start end of the preceding compact layer and includes one or more turns of fiber axially spaced from each other and dis­posed at an angle to the turns and grooves of the preceding compact layer.

Multifunctional optical fiber bundles for image and signal transmission or sensor applications are proposed. The optical fiber bundles exhibit reduced speckle noise resulting from spatial inhomogeneity and asymmetry of radiation of specific fibers of the bundle. This is achieved by ordering of fiber positions in the bundle sensitive probe tips according to some prescribed rule.

A communication cable winding is disclosed which is protected from heat, turbulence and friction during unwinding by a plastic skirt which surrounds a portion of the winding on a spool or bobbin. An outer portion of the cable may also be provided with a protective overlayer which forms the outer layer of the winding not protected by the plastic skirt.

THE OPTICAL FIBER ELEMENT IS FOLDED BACK UPON ITSELF AT THE END OF THE THUS FORMED LAYER OF THE OPITICAL FIBER ELEMENT WHILE THE ROTATION OF THE DRUM IS REVERSED SO THAT A SUCCEEDING LAYER OF THE OPTICAL FIBER ELEMENT IS FORMED ON THE PRECEDING LAYER. THE SENSE OF THE HELICAL ANGLE OF THE WINDINGS IN EACH OF THE LAYERS IN THUS KEPT THE SAME. THE UNIT OPITICAL FIBER BUNDLES EACH HAVING THE CROSSSECTION IN THE FORM OF A TRAPEZOID OR A REGULAR TRIANGLE, THE TRAPEZOID HAVING A BOTTOM SIDE THE LENGTH OF WHICH IS TWO TIMES AS LONG AS THAT OF THE REMAINING THREE SIDEDS OF THE SAME LENGTH AND OPPOSITE TWO SIDE SYMMETRICALLY INCLINED WITH RESPECT TO THE CENTER LINE OF THE CROSS-SECTION WITH THE INCLUDED ANGLE OF 60* FORMED THEREBETWEEN. THE UNIT OPTICAL FIBER BUNDLES ARE BONDED WITH EACH OTHER AT THE RESPECTIVE ENDS THEREOF SO AS TO FORM A COMPOSITE OPTICAL FIBER BUNDLE HAVING A LARGE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA. EACH OF THE UNIT OPTICAL FIBER BUNDLES COMPRISES A PLURALITY OF OPTICAL FIBER ELEMENTS BONDED WITH EACH OTHER THROUGH THE LENGTH THEREOF SO THAT THE CROSS-SECTION OF THE SAME IS MADE IN THE FORM OF A TRIANGLE. THE UNIT OPTICAL FIBER BUNDLES ARE BONDED WITH EACH OTHER AT THE RESPECTIVE ENDS THEREOF SO THAT A COMPOSITE OPTICAL FIBER BUNDLE HAVING A LARGE CROSS-SECTIONAL AREA IS FORMED.
