Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) are emerging as an indispensable solid-state light source for the next generation lighting industry and display systems due to their unique properties including but not limited to energy savings, environment-friendliness, small volume, and long persistence. Until now, major challenges in pc-WLEDs have been to achieve high luminous efficacy, high chromatic stability, brilliant color-rending properties, and price competitiveness against fluorescent lamps, which rely critically on the phosphor properties. A comprehensive understanding of the nature and limitations of phosphors and the factors dominating the general trends in pc-WLEDs is of fundamental importance for advancing technological applications. This report aims to provide the most recent advances in the synthesis and application of phosphors for pc-WLEDs with emphasis specifically on: (a) principles to tune the excitation and emission spectra of phosphors: prediction according to crystal field theory, and structural chemistry characteristics (e.g. covalence of chemical bonds, electronegativity, and polarization effects of element); (b) pc-WLEDs with phosphors excited by blue-LED chips: phosphor characteristics, structure, and activated ions (i.e. Ce 3+ and Eu 2+ ), including YAG:Ce, other garnets, non-garnets, sulfides, and (oxy)nitrides; (c) pc-WLEDs with phosphors excited by near ultraviolet LED chips: single-phased white-emitting phosphors (e.g. Eu 2+ –Mn 2+ activated phosphors), red-green-blue phosphors, energy transfer, and mechanisms involved; and (d) new clues for designing novel high-performance phosphors for pc-WLEDs based on available LED chips. Emphasis shall also be placed on the relationships among crystal structure, luminescence properties, and device performances. In addition, applications, challenges and future advances of pc-WLEDs will be discussed.

Progress in discovery and structural design of color conversion phosphors for LEDs

Garnets have the general formula of A3B2C3O12 and form a wide range of inorganic compounds, occurring both naturally (gemstones) and synthetically. Their physical and chemical properties are closely related to the structure and composition. In particular, Ce3+-doped garnet phosphors have a long history and are widely applied, ranging from flying spot cameras, lasers and phosphors in fluorescent tubes to more recent applications in white light LEDs, as afterglow materials and scintillators for medical imaging. Garnet phosphors are unique in their tunability of the luminescence properties through variations in the {A}, [B] and (C) cation sublattice. The flexibility in phosphor composition and the tunable luminescence properties rely on design and synthesis strategies for new garnet compositions with tailor-made luminescence properties. It is the aim of this review to discuss the variation in luminescence properties of Ce3+-doped garnet materials in relation to the applications. This review will provide insight into the relation between crystal chemistry and luminescence for the important class of Ce3+-doped garnet phosphors. It will summarize previous research on the structural design and optical properties of garnet phosphors and also discuss future research opportunities in this field.

Ce3+-Doped garnet phosphors: composition modification, luminescence properties and applications.

Nowadays, phosphor converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) have been widely used in solid-state lighting and display areas due to their superior lifetime, efficiency, and reliability as well as significant reduction in power consumption. Phosphors are indispensable components of pc-WLED devices, and their luminescence properties determine the quality of WLED lighting and displays. In order to further achieve high luminous efficacy, chromatic stability, and color-rending properties in pc-WLEDs, much effort has been focused on improving current pc-WLED phosphors and developing novel pc-WLED phosphors recently. This review article concerns commonly used rare earth ion (Eu2+ and Ce3+) activated inorganic phosphors, highlighting the important effect of spectral tuning via local structural variations on improving the luminescence performance of phosphors. The main spectral tuning strategies are discussed in detail and summarized, including (1) doping level control; (2) cationic substitution; (3) anionic substitution; (4) cationic–anionic substitution; (5) the crystal-site engineering approach; (6) mixing of nanophases.

Recent progress in luminescence tuning of Ce3+ and Eu2+-activated phosphors for pc-WLEDs

Since the mid-1990s, phosphors have played a key role in emerging solid-state white-lighting technologies that are based on combining a III-nitride-based near-UV or blue solid-state light source with downconversion to longer wavelengths. Almost all widely used phosphors comprise a crystalline oxide, nitride, or oxynitride host that is appropriately doped with either Ce3+ or Eu2+. These ions, with [Xe] 4fn5d0 configurations (n = 1 for Ce3+ and 7 for Eu2+) have proximal excited states that are [Xe] 4fn−15d1. Optical excitation into these states and concomitant reemission can be tuned into the appropriate regions of the visible spectrum by the crystal these ions are hosted in. In this article, we review the current needs and key aspects of the conversion process. We describe some currently used families of phosphors and consider why they are suitable for solid-state lighting. Finally, we describe some empirical rules for new and improved host materials.

Phosphors for Solid-State White Lighting

Abstract The discovery of inorganic phosphors that can be excited by GaN light emitting diodes in the wavelength range 380–460 nm is essential for improving the efficiency and light quality of solid state lighting devices. Garnets doped with Ce 3+ are of particular interest for this application. We have studied the luminescence of Ce 3+ in garnet phosphors and established a relationship between the excitation/emission wavelengths and the deviation from cubic symmetry around the rare-earth ion. Data are presented for both known yttrium aluminum and yttrium gallium garnet systems, as well as newly synthesized inverse garnets of the general formula Mg 3 Y 2− y Gd y Ge 3− z Si z O 12 :Ce (0 ⩽  y  ⩽ 2, z  = 0, 1).
