About Supramolecular Assemblies of π-Conjugated Systems

White organic light-emitting devices (WOLEDs) have advanced over the last twelve years to the extent that these devices are now being considered as efficient solid-state lighting sources. Initially, WOLEDs were targeted towards display applications for use primarily as liquid-crystal display backlights. Now, their power efficiencies have surpassed those of incandescent sources due to improvements in device architectures, synthesis of novel materials, and the incorporation of electrophosphorescent emitters. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of several WOLED architectures in terms of efficiency and color quality. Hindrances to their widespread acceptance as solid-state lighting sources are also noted.

White Organic Light‐Emitting Devices for Solid‐State Lighting

This article provides a review about electroluminescence from organic materials and deals in detail with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), light-emitting electro-chemical cells (LECs) and electrogenerated chemilumi-nescence (ECL) reflecting different electrooptical appli-cations of conjugated materials. It is written from an organic chemist's point of view and pays particular attention to the development of organic materials involved in corresponding devices. In recent years a substantial amount of both academic and industrial research has been directed to organic electroluminescence in an effort to improve the processability and tunability of organic materials and the longevity of OLEDs and LECs. On the eve of the commercialization of organic electrolumi-nescence this review provides an overview of lifetimes and efficiencies attained and reflects materials and device concepts developed over the last decade. In this context electrogenerated chemiluminescence is discussed with respect to its importance as a versatile tool to simulate the fundamental electrochemical processes in OLEDs.

The electroluminescence of organic materials

This article concentrates on our recent results on several classes of photo- and electro-active organic materials that permit thin film formation and discusses their synthesis, properties, functions and potential applications for electronic and optoelectronic devices. The materials studied include amorphous molecular materials, titanyl phthalocyanine, oligothiophenes with well-defined structures, and non-conjugated polymers containing pendant oligothiophenes or other π-electron systems. The thin films of these materials find potential applications for use in organic electroluminescent, photovoltaic, electrochromic, and other devices.

Starburst Molecules for Amorphous Molecular Materials. 4,4′,4″-Tris(N,N-diphenylamino)triphenylamine and 4,4′,4″-Tris[N-(3-methylphenyl)-N-phenylamino]triphenylamine

A novel family of amorphous molecular materials containing an oligothiophene moiety with varying conjugation length function as thermally and morphologically stable, colour-tunable emitting materials for organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Tuning of the emission colour from light blue to orange is achieved by varying the conjugation length of the oligothiophene moiety. Double-layer organic LEDs that use this novel class of amorphous molecular materials as an emitting layer and tris(quinolin-8-olato)aluminium or 1,3,5-tris[5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl]benzene as an electron-transport layer exhibit high performances.
