Photoinduced reactivity of titanium dioxide

This paper reviews recent studies on the semiconductor photocatalysis based on surface-modified TiO2 of which application is mainly focused on environmental remediation. TiO2 photocatalysis that is based on the photoinduced interfacial charge transfer has been extensively studied over the past four decades. A great number of modification methods of semiconductor photocatalysts have been developed and investigated to accelerate the photoconversion, to enable the absorption of visible light, or to alter the reaction mechanism to control the products and intermediates. In this regard, various modification methods of TiO2 are classified according to the kind of surface modifiers (metal-loading, impurity doping, inorganic adsorbates, polymer coating, dye-sensitization, charge transfer complexation) and their effects on photocatalytic reaction mechanism and kinetics are discussed in detail. Modifying TiO2 in various ways not only changes the mechanism and kinetics under UV irradiation but also introduces visible light activity that is absent with pure TiO2. Each modification method influences the photocatalytic activity and mechanism in a way different from others and the observed modification effects are often different depending on the test substrates and conditions even for the same modification method. Better understanding of the modification effects on TiO2 photocatalysis is necessary to obtain reliable results, to assess the photoconversion efficiency more quantitatively, and to further improve the modification methods.

A survey of photocatalytic materials for environmental remediation.

Surface hybridization of TiO2 with graphite-like carbon layers of a few molecular layers thickness yields efficient photocatalysts. Photoelectrochemical measurements confirm an electronic interaction between TiO2 and the graphite-like carbon. A TiO2 photocatalyst with a carbon shell of three molecular layers thickness (∼1 nm) shows the highest photocatalytic activity which is about two times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2 under UV light irradiation. The mechanism of the enhanced photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation is based on the high migration efficiency of photoinduced electrons at the graphite-like carbon/TiO2 interface, which is due to the electronic interaction between both materials. In addition, a high activity under visible light irradiation is observed after graphite-like carbon hybridization. TiO2's response is extended into the visible range of the solar spectrum due to the electronic coupling of π states of the graphite-like carbon and conduction band states of TiO2.

Efficient TiO2 Photocatalysts from Surface Hybridization of TiO2 Particles with Graphite-like Carbon

Treatment of textile wastewater using titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalysis has been started from the last decade and reached attention to the researchers because of its versatile application. The variety of applications of TiO2 as a photocatalyst has been taken place because of low operating temperature, biologically inert nature, low energy consumption, water insolubility, ease availability and photoactivity, less toxicity, high chemical stability, suitable flat band potential, narrow band gap and environmentally benign. The successful and efficient application of photocatalysis depends on quality of photocatalyst, nature of pollutants, and source of light, which should be in close contact with each other. The TiO2 photocatalyst is used for the effluent treatment of textile wastewater in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Heterogeneous UV-TiO2 photocatalysis is capable to remove organic pollutants from textile wastewater, which has been widely studied and the technology also being commercialized in many developing countries in the world. This review focuses on the mechanism of UV-TiO2 photocatalysis, modification of TiO2 photocatalyst, and application of doping and co-doping in order to improve the photocatalytic activity in wastewater treatment. In addition, the review conveys comprehensive and fundamental assessments of the photocatalytic activity for the removal of organic dyes and phenolic compounds from textile wastewater.

Photocatalytic Activity Improvement and Application of UV-TiO2 Photocatalysis in Textile Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Carbon coating of photocatalytic anatase-type TiO2 powders was successfully carried out by heating a powder mixture of poly(vinyl alcohol) and TiO2 under N2 gas flow at temperatures above 700 °C. All particles of TiO2 were covered by a carbon layer and looked black. For methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution, carbon-coated anatase powders thus prepared showed marked adsorption and decomposition under UV irradiation and were confirmed to keep almost the same photoactivity as that without any carbon coating. Carbon coating of anatase-type TiO2 was found to give different merits for photoactive performance; suppression of phase transformation from anatase to rutile at high temperatures, quick adsorption of MB into the carbon layer, decomposition of adsorbed MB by TiO2 and prevention of the interaction of TiO2 with binder resin. Repeated cycles of adsorption and decomposition of
methylene blue in aqueous solution were experimentally confirmed.
