A control device for an internal combustion engine, equipped with: an exhaust purification catalyst capable of storing oxygen; a downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor arranged downstream in the direction of flow of exhaust from the exhaust purification catalyst; and an air-fuel ratio control device that controls the air-fuel ratio such that air-fuel ratio of the exhaust flowing into the exhaust purification catalyst reaches a target air-fuel ratio. A method of controlling the air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to an internal combustion engine including the step of interrupting the feedback control of the air-fuel ratio responsive to a detected value of the concentration of an exhaust gas ingredient after a high load operating condition of the engine in which a detected load on the engine is above a predetermined reference value has continued over a predetermined time period. Calculation is made of a value of a parameter dependent on a ratio of a time period over which the detected load on the engine continued to be above a predetermined value to a time period over which the detected load on the engine continued to be below the predetermined value. The predetermined time is set based on the calculated value of the parameter dependent on the ratio. The predetermined value may be equal to the predetermined reference value, or alternatively may be smaller than the predetermined reference value. Alternatively, the rotational speed of the engine may be detected and counting of the predetermined time period is started when the detected rotational speed of the engine exceeds a predetermined value during the feedback control of the air-fuel ratio.

Air-fuel ratio control method for internal combustion engines

Provided is a control device for an internal-combustion engine provided with a throttle valve installed in an intake path. A full intake air amount, which is the intake air amount corresponding to when the throttle valve is fully open, is calculated in accordance with engine revolution speed, and a theoretical intake air amount, which corresponds to when engine exhaust gas does not recirculate to a combustion chamber, is calculated in accordance with the full intake air amount and an intake pressure. An actual intake air amount of the engine is detected or estimated, and an exhaust gas recirculation rate is calculated using the theoretical intake air amount and the actual intake air amount. The engine is controlled using the calculated exhaust gas recirculation rate.

Control device for internal combustion engine

A lean burn internal combustion engine wherein a basic fuel amount is calculated from a map based on the intake pressure and the engine speed, and a lean correction factor, which is multiplied by the basic fuel amount, is calculated from a lean map based on the intake pressure and engine speed. A second lean map based on the throttle opening and engine speed is provided for obtaining a lean correction factor when the degree of opening of the throttle valve is larger than a predetermined value. A lean sensor is provided for obtaining a signal indicating the air fuel ratio for carrying out a feedback control. The lean sensor is provided with a heater for controlling the temperature of the sensing element of the heater. A basic map for the heater power, which is based on the intake pressure and engine speeded, is provided, and a correction map for the heater power is provided for reducing the heater power from the value obtained from the basic map when the lean map based on the intake pressure and engine speed is employed for obtaining the lean air-fuel mixture, to prevent thermal damage to the sensor element.

Lean burn internal combustion engine

An air-fuel ratio control device for an internal combustion engine controls an air-fuel ratio to the lean side rather than to a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio by the use of a factor determined in accordance with inlet pipe pressure and engine speed. A throttle opening degree sensor is provided to detect a degree of throttle opening, and on the basis of the degree of throttle opening, the factor determined in accordance with the inlet pipe pressure and the engine speed is corrected in a high load range of the engine. Since the output of the throttle opening degree sensor in the high load range of the engine is more accurate than the output of a pressure sensor for detecting the inlet pipe pressure, the air-fuel ratio can be controlled accurately in the high load range by correcting the factor in accordance with the degree of throttle opening.
