Systems incorporating biometric technologies have become ubiquitous in personal, commercial, and governmental identity management applications. Both cooperative (e.g., access control) and noncooperative (e.g., surveillance and forensics) systems have benefited from biometrics. Such systems rely on the uniqueness of certain biological or behavioral characteristics of human beings, which enable for individuals to be reliably recognized using automated algorithms. Recently, however, there has been a wave of public and academic concerns regarding the existence of systemic bias in automated decision systems (including biometrics). Most prominently, face recognition algorithms have often been labeled as “racist” or “biased” by the media, nongovernmental organizations, and researchers alike. The main contributions of this article are: 1) an overview of the topic of algorithmic bias in the context of biometrics; 2) a comprehensive survey of the existing literature on biometric bias estimation and mitigation; 3) a discussion of the pertinent technical and social matters; and 4) an outline of the remaining challenges and future work items, both from technological and social points of view.

Background Subtraction in Real Applications: Challenges, Current Models and Future Directions

This paper details MORPH a longitudinal face database developed for researchers investigating all facets of adult age-progression, e.g. face modeling, photo-realistic animation, face recognition, etc. This database contributes to several active research areas, most notably face recognition, by providing: the largest set of publicly available longitudinal images; longitudinal spans from a few months to over twenty years; and, the inclusion of key physical parameters that affect aging appearance. The direct contribution of this data corpus for face recognition is highlighted in the evaluation of a standard face recognition algorithm, which illustrates the impact that age-progression, has on recognition rates. Assessment of the efficacy of this algorithm is evaluated against the variables of gender and racial origin. This work further concludes that the problem of age-progression on face recognition (FR) is not unique to the algorithm used in this work.

MORPH: A Longitudinal Image Database of Normal Adult Age-Progression.

We represent face progression and face regression on the children face image dataset containing 8581 faces images in the age group [2 : 20] years. This dataset contains 4789 and 3792 images of boys and girls respectively. To generate the images we have used a generative approach such that we don't require pair models (more than 2 images of a person with age difference of 1 or more). In addition to regression and progression, we have compared the ground truth with the regressed or progressed images. These progressed or regressed images can be used to trace and identify children lost at the young age as a victim of child trafficking or abduction.

Retrieval of Facial Images Re-rendered with Natural Aging Effect using Child Facial Image and Age

Child face aging and rejuvenation has amassed considerable active research interest due to its immense impact on monitoring applications especially for finding lost/abducted children with childhood photos and hence protect children. Prior studies are primarily motivated to enhance the generation quality and aging of face images, rather than quantifying face recognition performance. To address this challenge we propose ChildFace model. Our model does child face aging and rejuvenation while using gender as condition. Our model uses Conditional Generative Adversarial Nets (cGANs), VGG19 based perceptual loss and LightCNN29 age classifier and produces impressive results. Intense quantitative study based on verification, identification and age estimation proves that our model is competent to existing state-of-art models and can make a significant contribution in identifying missing children.

ChildFace: Gender Aware Child Face Aging

Analysis and recognition of facial expression is an important aspect to implement the intelligent man -machine interface. It is also a significant component of artificial intelligence and research of emotion computing. It plays a significant role for illiterate and visually challenged users to access information. Mode of human -computer interaction speech, text, gestures, facial expressions, symbols, or a combination of these. This paper presents a detailed comparative analysis of expression recognition across multiple databases. The system uses Gabor and Log-Gabor filter for feature extraction. Then facial emotion is recognized using both K-Nearest Neighbour KNN and Artificial Neural Network ANN technique. Various test cases are explored in detail using which we conclude that log-Gabor filter and ANN gives best results with 96.4% accuracy, even across multiple databases.

Facial Expression Recognition

The color and gradient based sequential state estimation method has proved its applicability in many video based tracking applications. This paper proposes a multi-modal approach applicable to trajectory formation of multiple moving objects with complex random motion structure. The Bayesian framework for tracking is formulated in this paper that incorporate spatio temporal information in selecting significant particles and establishing statistical correlation between prior model of target and its recent observation. It is especially applicable to real time trajectory analysis of situations with miss detection and formation of segmented tracks belonging to same object. The quantitative as well as qualitative performance of the proposed approach is evaluated on various real-world video sequences with challenging environment like random movement between objects and partial occlusion. The proposed approach performs better than other state-of-art method used for multiple moving objects tracking in videos.

Multi-object trajectory coupling using online target specific decision making

Handwritten text recognition has been an active research area for many years. Handwritten text recognition needs to perform some preprocessing steps for better recognition. First, we find binary image of given handwritten text document and then after performing the line segmentation task, we normalize it to the segmented lines. There are various normalization tasks such as skew normalization, slant normalization and size normalization. This paper, focuses on the handwritten document binarization and skew normalization and proposes a novel global binarization approach, which is very cost effective. We also propose a new skew normalization approach which is based on orthogonal projection of the segmented line with respect to x-axis. The method has been experimented on various styles of handwritten text documents, and it is found that it detects the exact skew angle, and corrects it efficiently. A comparative study has also been reported to provide a detailed analysis of the proposed methods together with some other existing methods in the literature.
