Why Goethe’s Faust bears the personal name “Heinrich” has not been convincingly explained by far-reaching research into the sources of the text. However, a semiotic approach that deciphers the name as a polyvalent semiotic system offers new perspectives.

Naming Goethe’s Faust: A Matter of Significance

Die neue Edition von Goethes Faust im Rahmen der Frankfurter Ausgabe (FA) des Deutschen Klassiker Verlags hat bei ihrem Erscheinen im Herbst 1994 ein auÃŸerordentlich starkes und positives Echo gefunden. Die FeuÃœletons der groÃŸen Zeitungen brachten ausfÃ1⁄4hrÃ1⁄4che Besprechungen, in denen durchweg eine superlativische Rhetorik vorherrschte und die dem ahnungslosen Leser nichts Geringeres zu suggerieren versuchten, als daÃŸ von hier und heute eine neue Epoche sowohl der Faust-PhÃ¤olog^e als auch der Faust-Exegese ausgehe.1 Auf dem Uterarischen Markt jenes Herbsts wurde diese Edition, von der Verlagswerbung dazu ermuntert, aUenthalben als Sensation angepriesen. Seither jedoch hat der Weihrauch sich verzogen; der BÃ1⁄4ck ist frei geworden fÃ1⁄4r eine kritische WÃ1⁄4rdigung: es gut, die durch das Medienereignis eher verdunkelte phÃ1⁄4ologische Leistung dieser Edition, aber auch ihre Problematik sowie ihren historischen SteÃ1⁄4enwert, genauer ins Auge zu fassen.2 Das von Albrecht SchÃ¶ne verantwortete phÃ1⁄4ologische GroÃŸunternehmen besteht aus einem gut 800-seitigen Textund einem Ã1⁄4ber 1100seitigen Kommentar-Band. Schon der Textbestand des ersten TeÃ1⁄4bandes erregt Verwunderung. Er enthÃ¤lt selbstverstÃ¤ndÃ1⁄4ch den ersten und zweiten TeU der TragÃ¶die sowie den sogenannten Urfaust, den SchÃ¶ne jedoch umbenannt sehen wÃ1⁄4l zu \"Faust. FrÃ1⁄4he Fassung.\" DafÃ1⁄4r werden sehr bedenkenswerte GrÃ1⁄4nde ins Feld gefÃ1⁄4hrt: wft haben es hier mit einer \"baÃ1⁄4adesken BUderreÃ1⁄4ie\" (II, 828) zu tun, die eigentlich nicht als Vorstufe zu Faust I angesehen werden kÃ¶nne, wie umgekehrt der TragÃ¶die erster TeÃ1⁄4, streng genommen, nicht die Fortschreibung der frÃ1⁄4hen BÃœderreihe darsteUe. Forms of Figuration in Goethe's Faust

Over the last twenty- five years, Faust scholarship transformed significantly as a result of Heinz Schlaffer's “rediscovery” of the allegorical structure of Faust II . The emphasis on allegory facilitated an interpretation that in contrast to the unifying view of a symbolic reading demonstrated the rift in modern-day experience. According to Schlaffer, through allegorical form, Goethe achieved adequate representation of a rapidly developing and increasingly abstract modern society. This essay attempts to interpret the allegorical structure of Faust II differently than Schlaffer. While Schlaffer equates the use of allegory with Goethe's regaining of representational assurance in a mimetic sense, the approach employed in this essay emphasizes Goethe's use of allegorical forms as a poetic means to represent adequately the role of art and literature in modern society. In essence this article addresses the modernization of the system of literature, which was to reach a similar degree of complexity found in other subsystems comprising modern society. A reading of Faust I will elucidate further the different poetological approaches at work in the two parts of Goethe's opus magnum. (KP; In German)

"Das, was ihm fehlt, das teil' ich aus": Faust und die Allegorie der Poesie

Recent studies in the early history of semiotics allow us to trace an open concern with the problem of language in Goethe's Faust. The protagonist appears as a quest hero in search of a revelatory sign, whether verbal or pictorial, that will release him from the world of mediating representations. The folly of the quest is consistently satirized from the viewpoint of Romantic aesthetics and its theory of the symbol. For the Romantics, the aesthetic symbol is a sign that paradoxically effects a revelation by affirming its own semiotic nature. But in elevating semiotic phenomena to the status of epiphanies, Goethean symbolism in Faust confronts the same impasses that beset the hero as he seeks to escape the rule of signs. The recurring quandaries arise when the Romantic text responds to the initial challenge of semiotics by attempting to reconcile semiotics and theology.
