ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the stresses and strains generated after the application of two types of forces (traction of 200 gf and torsion of 20 N.cm) in two types of orthodontic mini-implants inserted at different (45° and 90° to the cortical bone) angles.Material and methodthree-dimensional models of two brands of mini-implant (SIN – Sao Paulo, Brazil, and RMO – South Korea) were exported and analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA). Analyses were performed on simulations of cortical bone, cancellous bone and the screw.ResultFEA analysis showed that RMO mini-implants had greater elastic deformation when subjected to tensile and torsional forces when compared with SIN mini-implants. For both trademarks and insertion angles tested, there was greater cortical bone deformation, but with the greatest strain located on the mini-implant. Tension on the mini-implant was located in its transmucosal profile region.ConclusionWhen comparing the two brands of mini-implants by FEA, it is fair to conclude that that the larger number of threads and their greater angle of inclination resulted in less resistance to deformation and induced a higher level of tension in the mini-implant and cortical bone when subjected to forces, especially when inserted at an angle of 45o to the cortical bone.

Insertion angle of orthodontic mini-implants and their biomechanical performance: finite element analysis

To compare resorbable plates with titanium plates for the fixation of zygomatic fractures, taking into account postoperative complications. This systematic review followed the guidelines of PRISMA and the recommendations of the Cochrane Handbook and was registered in PROSPERO. The electronic search was performed in the Web of Science, PubMed, Virtual Health Library, and Cochrane Library databases and in the gray literature. The study selection and the data extraction were performed by three calibrated and independent researchers. The assessment of the risk of bias in the studies was performed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool for clinical trials. Meta-analyses were performed using Review Manager Software version 5.3, using the Peto’s Odds Ratios (PORs), and when I2 > 30, the random effect model was used. The evaluation of the quality of the evidence was carried out through GRADE. A total of 2651 studies were screened and only nine were included; 7 of which were used for quantitative assessment. The follow-up time for patients ranged from 6 months to 5 years. All studies showed a low risk of bias in the “incomplete outcome data” domain. The need for plate removal (POR: 0.11, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.81, I2 = 0%) and dehiscence (POR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.63, I2 = not applied) was lower for the group of patients who used resorbable plates than for titanium plates. There was no difference in the occurrence of infection, diplopia, or paresthesia between the fixation methods. Resorbable plates showed better postoperative clinical performance.

Comparison between resorbable plates vs. titanium plates for treatment of zygomatic fractures: a systematic review with meta-analysis

The aim of this study is to evaluate hexagon deformation of dental implant regarding to the insertion force, verifying the external hexagon platforms before and after each torque performed. Thereunto, 25 implants were selected and divided into 5 groups with 5 implants each one; every group received different torque 10N, 20N, 30N, 40N and 100N. A Surgical torque wrench was used, with the implant installation key, what established the insertion force for each group. The platform measurements were carried out before and after apply the torque by analyses of images acquired through implant platforms. We conclude, by this study methodology, 100N forces were able to cause changes on hexagon dimensions; however, it did not damage the prosthesis platform adaptation.

Evaluaton of hexagon deformation of dental implant regarding to the insertion force

Introduction: The number of people with no teeth in Brazil is growing, 11% of the population is totally toothless, corresponding to an amount of 16 million people and 33% of the population makes use of some type of dental prosthesis. The number of teeth in the oral cavity is small, causing social, physical, psychological and nutritional problems to directly affect edentulous quality of life.
Objective: The objective of this article is to relate the time of use of total dentures with the quality of life of these users.
Methodology: We interviewed 299 users of total mucosal supported prosthesis and 48 users of implantable total prosthesis using two questionnaires, the Oral Health Impact Profile-14Br (OHIP-14Br) and sociodemographic questionnaire.
Results: Full denture wearers have a better quality of life in all variables compared to mucosupported denture wearers and mucosupported full denture wearers have a strong relationship between quality of life and duration of prosthesis use

Relação entre tempo de uso e qualidade de vida em usuários de prótese total no estado do amapá

Desde a primeira colecistectomia, a tecnica cirurgica para este procedimento veio recebendo diversas modificacoes. Com o avanco dos equipamentos laparoscopicos e com o advento da minilaparoscopia, surge uma nova realidade para a realizacao dessa cirurgia: colecistectomia minilaparoscopica, o qual traz beneficios ao paciente. A crescente preocupacao com o processo de limpeza de artigos medico-hospitalares desperta questionamentos em relacao a qualidade da higienizacao nas instituicoes hospitalares. A agua e um item critico no processo de sanitizacao e antissepsia do instrumental cirurgico em razao da procedencia e do tipo de tratamento que a mesma e submetida. A combinacao desses fatores pode danificar o aco inoxidavel dos equipamentos cirurgicos podendo manchar, reduzir sua resistencia a corrosao, ate o favorecimento de formacao de fissuras em areas tensionadas, acarretando rompimento do instrumental. Foi realizada uma revisao na literatura correlacionando a qualidade da agua na limpeza do material minilaparoscopico e sua manutencao. Foi observado uma relacao direta entre tempo de vida util do material e, consequentemente, sua qualidade para fins cirurgicos e a qualidade do sistema de higienizacao do material, sendo a agua um dos fatores chave para a manutencao da qualidade e diminuicao do risco de utilizar estes equipamentos. A seguranca da colecistectomia minilaparoscopica tem como fator independente o tratamento empregado no material pelo Centro de Materiais de Esterilizacao, porem e necessario o amplo conhecimento do tipo de material envolvido e metodos de higienizacao para cada aparelho, individualizando o processo de limpeza.

ABSTRACT Orthodontic screws are used to move teeth in several directions during orthodontic dental treatment. The forces involved during insertion and during the service of the orthodontic screws deserve special attention because they can lead to fracture of the same leading to treatment failure. Loads supported by orthodontic screws can be divided into insertion loads and activation loads. Among these two groups insertion loads are the most signifi cant and should be taken into consideration for the product design. This paper is about optimization of the mechanical strength of orthodontic screws with regard to the efforts that they are subjected during the surgical insertion. This article reports continuous improvement actions implemented to improve the mechanical performance of orthodontic screws. The design modifi cations proposed allowed a gain of up to 54% in fl exural strength of screw models analyzed.

O aco inoxidavel e um dos principais materiais empregados na fabricacao de fresas odontologicas devido a combinacao de propriedades mecânicas adequadas e elevada resistencia a corrosao. Apesar de apresentar uma resistencia a corrosao superior a maioria dos metais, em meios muito agressivos os acos inoxidaveis podem sofrer algum tipo de corrosao, podendo prejudicar de alguma forma sua durabilidade ou aparencia. Este trabalho apresenta caracteristicas e resultados de ensaios realizados em fresas odontologicas com proposito de avaliar a resistencia a corrosao do aco inoxidavel M340. O objetivo principal deste estudo e determinar as resistencias a esterilizacao em autoclave, a corrosao e a exposicao termica dos instrumentais cirurgicos (fresas odontologicas) fabricadas em aco inoxidavel.(AU) Stainless steel is one of the main materials used in the manufacture of dental burs due to the combination of mechanical properties and high resistance to corrosion. Despite presenting a corrosion resistance superior to most metals, in very aggressive to stainless steels may suffer some form of corrosion that may impair in any way their durability or appearance. This paper presents features and results of tests on dental burs in order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of stainless steel M340. The objective of this study is to determine the resistance to autoclaving, corrosion and thermal exposure of the surgical instruments (dental burs) made of stainless steel.(AU)
