Escape education: A systematic review on escape rooms in education

Applying digital escape rooms infused with science teaching in elementary school: Learning performance, learning motivation, and problem-solving ability

Purpose: Gamification or learning using game elements is a process that seeks to capture students' interest. One of the most popular games in recent years is the Escape Room, but the study of its use in education and with health professionals is still limited. The aim of this study was to find out the perceptions and experiences of final year nursing students in an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) by means of an Escape Room.Methods: In January 2019, 9 focus groups (FG) were held, with a total of 95 final year nursing students. We applied a qualitative content analysis approach and ATLAS.ti version 8 was used for data analysis.Results: The data revealed 3 main themes and 8 sub-themes. The three main themes, which were mapped to the conceptual framework, were student learning outcomes, emotional impact on students and conclusions on the serious games experience. Both the main themes and the sub-themes were illustrated using representative quotes from the participants.Conclusions: These results can help to apply these methodologies, such as the Escape Room, alongside other pre-existing ones, complementing the way in which students are assessed and the development of important nursing skills, such as teamwork and communication.

A review on use of escape rooms in education – touching the void

In recent years, educational escape rooms have started to gain momentum in the academic community. Prior research has reported on the use of educational escape rooms in several fields. However, earlier works have failed to assess the impact of this sort of activities for teaching programming in terms of learning effectiveness. This work fills the existing gap in the literature by examining an educational escape room for teaching programming in a higher education setting by means of three different instruments: (1) a pre-test and a post-test for measuring learning gains, (2) a survey for assessing students' perceptions, and (3) a web platform for recording student interaction data during the activity. The results of this work provide, for the first time, empirical evidence that educational escape rooms are an effective and engaging way of teaching programming.

Analyzing Learning Effectiveness and Students’ Perceptions of an Educational Escape Room in a Programming Course in Higher Education

An Escape Room as a Simulation Teaching Strategy

Background Immersive learning activities, such as escape room educational gaming in nursing simulation laboratories, have proven to be effective teaching strategies that promote communication and teamwork. These activities also provide educators with opportunities to assess clinical skills competencies, as well as providing them with a means for evaluating the transfer of didactic knowledge to clinical practice. Method An obstetrical skills relay race with an escape room element was created as a formative evaluation method to determine if nursing students were able to demonstrate competency related to the identified learning needs. Results The competitive aspects of this learning activity were perceived as exciting and motivating by the educators and students. Conclusion An escape room-themed relay race incorporated into an obstetric skills laboratory is considered an innovative and formative evaluation method, as well as an engaging and motivating learning activity for nursing students. Escape Room Relay Race: "Go for the Gold" in Formative Assessment.

A digital count-up clock was incorporated into a multiple-patient simulation that required nursing students to respond to laboratory values and administer medications in a timely fashion. This study utilized observational methodology to analyze student response times and leadership behaviors. Results indicated a count-up clock can be utilized to assess attainment of patient safety competencies. Leadership behaviors observed included time management and collaboration. Utilization of the count-up clock enabled faculty to determine that quality and safety measures were being achieved. This pilot study sets precedence for more rigorous research to measure nursing student competencies where time matters.
