Abstract: In this paper I discuss why computation has come to have an increasingly important place in the theory of discourse interpretation. I argue that essential to discourse interpretation is the idea of computing a discourse structure for a discourse; from this structure the interpretation follows. This structure is part of the logical form for a discourse. After examining several ways in which one might compute such structures, I argue that the preferred method is a local and opportunistic strategy that makes defeasible guesses. I end by suggesting that once we have constructed a decent model of computing discourse structure, we are in a better position to evaluate what role storage can play.
