An apparatus and method is provided for detecting loss of differential signal carried by a pair of differential signal lines. According to the method, a common mode level is detected from voltages on the pair of differential signal lines. A threshold level is generated, referenced to the detected common mode level. A signal level is generated from the voltages on the pair of differential signal lines, the signal level being averaged over a first period of time. From the threshold level and the detected common mode level a reference level is generated, the reference level being averaged over a second period of time longer than then the first period of time. The signal level is compared to the reference level to determine if a signal is present on the pair of differential signal lines.

A circuit which detects the median peak of a burst of pulses. The peak value of each pulse in a pulse burst is detected and stored. The peak value of each pulse is then compared to the peak value of every other pulse and the results of the comparison are used to determined the median peak.

An apparatus comprising a first loss of signal circuit, a second loss of a signal circuit and a gate circuit. The first loss of a signal circuit may be configured to (i) receive an input signal containing a series of data and (ii) generate a first indication signal when the input signal is operating within a first frequency range. The second loss of signal circuit may be configured to (i) receive the input signal and (ii) generate a second indication signal when the input signal is operating within a second frequency range. The gate circuit may be configured to generate an output signal in response to either the first indication signal or the second indication signal being active.

A true average peak detector includes an input capacitor having a capacitance C and an output capacitor having a capacitance nC. N voltage samples are successively stored on the input capacitor and are transferred to the output capacitor without discharging the latter. The output voltage from the accumulated charge on the output capacitor is equal to a true average of the voltages of the n samples.
