Mobile Ipv6 protocols are retrofit of mobility onto the next generation Internet (IPv6) protocols. Many of the original IPv6 protocols have inbuilt timing mechanisms which aim at ensuring fairness of access to media and signaling efficiency. The effects of these timers on mobile IPv6 traffic has been found to significantly affect application traffic on these networks. One proposal to remove unnecessary timers in neighbor discovery is called fast router advertisement (FastRA). This paper presents performance comparisons of FastRA with unmodified neighbor discovery in mobile IPv6 environments.

Care-of address provisioning for efficient IPv6 mobility support

This paper formulates the Sport Event Filming with Connectivity Constraints (SEF-C $^2$ 2 ) problem. The SEF-C $^2$ 2 problem is an event coverage problem, which exploits a team of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) over a limited field in order to track the movements of an object (e.g., of the ball) and to deliver a video stream of the events (e.g., ball passes, goals) to the spectators meeting certain timeliness and video quality criteria. Assuming a priori knowledge of the whole sequence of actions, first a novel mathematical model is introduced that determines a sequence of movements for the UAVs, such that the timeliness of the filming is maximized and the total traveled distance is minimized. Then, dynamic, artificial potential function based, distributed UAV movement schemes that have no a priori knowledge of the sequence of game actions are proposed to optimize networking performance. Extensive simulations are used to analyze the performance in terms of video transmission quality and show that the proposed schemes outperform existing schemes.

Take the Field from Your Smartphone: Leveraging UAVs for Event Filming

Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) is a work in progress IETF standard for enabling mobility in IPv6 networks and is expected to have wide deployment. We investigate an integrated mobility and service management scheme based on MIPv6 with the goal to minimize the overall network signaling cost in MIPv6 systems for serving mobility and service management related operations. Our design extends IETF work-in-progress Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) with the notion of dynamic mobility anchor points (DMAPs) for each mobile node (MN) instead of static ones for all MNs. These DMAPs are access routers chosen by individual MNs to act as a regional router to reduce the signaling overhead for intra-regional movements. The DMAP domain size, i.e., the number of subnets covered by a DMAP, is based on the MN's mobility and service characteristics. Under our DMAP protocol, a MN interacts with its home agent and application servers as in the MIPv6 protocol, but optimally determines when and where to launch a DMAP to minimize the network cost in serving the user's mobility and service management operations. We demonstrate that our DMAP protocol for integrated mobility and service management yields significantly improved performance over basic MIPv6 and HMIPv6.

Handoff performance with mobile IPv6 route optimization strongly depends on the efficiency of IP-layer auto-configuration mechanisms as well as the flexibility of mobile nodes to schedule and parallelize their signaling. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the handoff performance with the standard IPv6 protocol suite and mobile IPv6, and it identifies several sources for delay. While some of the delays are already well known, an optimized and widely applicable handoff approach is yet to be found. The paper hence proceeds to discuss existing and new optimization proposals, some of which are currently under standardization within the IETF, and elaborates how a combination of those can significantly improve handoff experience.

Currently, MIPv6 handovers can cause packet delay and/or packet loss for many hundreds of milliseconds. The maximum acceptable disruption for real-time voice traffic is in the tens of milliseconds.
