A power distribution system and method, including a direct-current current source which is commutated among a number of distribution circuits which function as independent and modular power sources. Each distribution circuit includes a capacitor which is connected to the direct-current current source through a switch. The load is connected in parallel with the capacitor. The capacitor is charged to a predetermined level, generally matching the required load voltage, and periodically checked and recharged as necessary. There may be a plurality of distribution circuits to provide power to separate circuits or specific portions of a larger circuit. By varying the switch timing and logic, the output voltage of each distribution circuit may be varied, allowing a centralized power supply to provide power to a variety of electrical components with varying voltage requirements.

A technique for extending the operating range of a flyforward converter to low input voltages. In one aspect, power converter includes a positive input supply rail and a negative input supply rail. A power converter input voltage is to be applied between the positive and negative input supply rails. A flyback energy transfer element having a flyback input winding and a forward energy transfer element having a forward input winding are also included. The flyback and forward input windings are coupled between the positive and negative input supply rails. Voltage control circuitry coupled to the forward energy transfer element is also included to reduce a voltage across the forward input winding, substantially to zero, when the power converter input voltage falls below a first threshold value.

Method and apparatus for extending the operating range of a flyforward converter

In a method and system for providing isolated power, a flyback controller includes a transformer operable to receive a primary voltage input and generate a secondary voltage output. A switch electrically coupled in series with a primary side of the transformer receives a control signal for controlling a duty cycle of the primary voltage. A controller is operable to generate the control signal responsive to receiving a plurality of inputs from the primary side. The controller regulates the secondary voltage output without receiving feedback input from a secondary side of the transformer by computing the secondary voltage as a predefined function of the plurality of the inputs when the switch is open.

A switched mode DC-DC power converter of the flyback type includes a primary circuit and a secondary circuit capacitively coupled to one another. In a first aspect the primary includes circuitry for achieving a 2:1 current transfer gain over the input, in a second aspect the secondary includes circuitry for achieving a 2:1 current transfer gain over an input. Combined, a 4:1 current transfer gain may be realized.

Variation on a single-ended primary inductor converter

An isolated flyback secondary inductor converter (IFSIC) and method of operation thereof. The IFSIC has a transformer with a primary winding for receiving electrical energy from a source of electrical power and a secondary winding coupled to the primary winding. The IFSIC also has a switch for intermittently coupling the transformer to the source of electrical power. The IFSIC includes a series-coupled inductor and diode coupled in parallel with the secondary winding to provide a path for the energy from the transformer when the transistor is ON, allowing the energy to be stored in the inductor rather than in the transformer.
