The intention of this work is to show that European expansion not only transformed the historical trajectory of non-European societies but also reconstituted the historical accounts of these societies before European intervention. It asserts that anthropology must pay more attention to history.

Europe and the People without History

Sited at the furthest limits of the Neolithic revolution and standing at the confluence of the two great sea routes of prehistory, Britain and Ireland are distinct from continental Europe for much of the prehistoric sequence. In this landmark study, Richard Bradley offers an interpretation of the unique archaeological record of these islands. Highlighting the achievements of its inhabitants, Bradley surveys the entire archaeological sequence over a 5,000 year period, from the last hunter-gatherers and the adoption of agriculture in the Neolithic period, to the discovery of Britain and Ireland by travellers from the Mediterranean during the later pre-Roman Iron Age. His study places special emphasis on landscapes, settlements, monuments, and ritual practices. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. The text takes account of recent developments in archaeological science, such as isotopic analyses of human and animal bone, recovery of ancient DNA, and more subtle and precise methods of radiocarbon dating.

Les protectores diuini lateris Augusti, soldats de haut rang attestes dans l’armee romaine entre le IIIe siecle et le VIe siecle, ont ete consideres tour a tour par les historiens comme des gardes du corps imperiaux, des officiers d’etat-major, ou les successeurs des centurions. Mais ces interpretations soulevent bien des contradictions que cette etude d’histoire militaire et sociale, appuyee sur un corpus prosopographique, vise a resoudre. Les evolutions du recrutement, des carrieres et des fonctions des protectores sont revelatrices des recompositions du commandement de l’armee romaine tardive. L’analyse ouvre egalement une fenetre sur l’environnement social et culturel de ces soldats privilegies, amenes a frequenter tant les champs de bataille que la cour imperiale. Enfin, en placant au centre de la reflexion la relation de ces soldats avec l’empereur, a la fois chef de l’armee et garant de l’ordre social et symbolique du monde de l’Antiquite tardive, on comprend comment les protectores s’inscrivaient, aux yeux des Romains, au sein d’un ordre terrestre des dignites refletant la hierarchie celeste.

Archaeological predictive modeling has been used successfully for over 20 years as a decision-making tool in cultural resources management. Its appreciation in academic circles however has been mixed because of its perceived theoretical poverty. In this paper, we discuss the issue of integrating current archaeological theoretical approaches and predictive modeling. We suggest a methodology for doing so based on cognitive archaeology, middle range theory, and paleoeconomic modeling. We also discuss the problems associated with testing predictive models.

Integrating Archaeological Theory and Predictive Modeling: a Live Report from the Scene

Les dieux augustes, connus essentiellement par l’epigraphie, dotes du titre imperial d’Augustus/a comme epithete, constituent un aspect du « culte imperial » et temoignent d’une triple acculturation politique, religieuse et sociale. L’ « augustalisation » se rapporte a l’empereur mais ne fait pas de lui un dieu incarne ou un protege des dieux. Elle exprime une synergie entre les dieux et l’empereur leur mediateur aupres des hommes. Le terme exclusif d’Augustus/a, renvoie a Romulus, aux auspices de l’imperator, a l’auctoritas, qui legitiment le Prince. Rares en Orient les dieux augustes sont surtout repandus en Occident, d’Auguste au debut du IVe s. Les dieux romains choisis pour l’augustalisation sont moins les divinites politiques attendues que des dieux protecteurs et bienfaiteurs des cites et des particuliers. Sous les dieux a noms romains apparaissent nombre de divinites indigenes reinterpretees (interpretatio romana) qui avec les dieux purement indigenes conservent des racines locales. Par sa souplesse l’augustalisation integre a l’Empire toutes ces identites provinciales. Propre aux milieux romanises, l’augustalisation est avant tout pratiquee par les elites municipales qui, a travers leur evergetisme, la diffusent dans les campagnes et surtout dans la population urbaine, renforcant ainsi leur legitimite. Les augustales et les riches affranchis, prompts a les imiter, la repandent dans le reste de la population. Hauts fonctionnaires et militaires restent en retrait. Presents dans tout l’espace urbain les dieux augustes se concentrent dans les centres civiques et autres loci celeberrimi, ou s’affiche le pouvoir. Scenographie urbaine et ceremonies expriment le consensus d’une societe hierarchisee autour des empereurs agents des dieux. L’augustalisation sacralise et legitime le pouvoir et groupe autour de lui une societe acculturee aux identites multiples.

Les dieux augustes dans l'Occident romain : un phénomène d'acculturation

In dit tiende deel van de AAS-serie staat de etnische ontwikkeling en etnogenese van de Bataven centraal in de context van het vroeg-Romeinse Rijk. Uitgangspunt vormt de duidige visie op etnische identiteit als een cultureel bepaalde, subjectieve constructie die tot stand komt in de interactie met de etnische 'ander'. Roymans maakt gebruik van historische en archeologische bronnen om het Bataafse imago en zelfbeeld te bestuderen tegen de achtergrond van de integratie van de Bataven in de Romeinse wereld. De Bataafse gemeenschap werd intensief geexploiteerd door de Romeinse autoriteiten voor de recrutering van hulpsoldaten. Als het gevolg daarvan ontwikkelde zij zich tot een sterk gemilitariseerde gemeenschap. De belangrijkste conclusie in deze studie is dat Rome een vergaande invloed uitoefende op de vorming van de Bataven als politieke entiteit en als een etnische groep. De combinatie van een uitgebreid theoretisch kader met een heldere presentatie van empirische informatie maken dit boek tot een onmisbaar werk voor iedereen die geinteresseerd in etniciteit en etnogenese ten tijde van de Romeinse overheersing.
