Abstract: The previously unknown life history, ecology and early life stages of the endangered false heath fritillary Melitaea diamina (Lang, 1789) are described. The larval host plant in Finland is recorded definitely for the first time. Females lay eggs only on non-flowering Valeriana sambucifolia Mikan fil. plants. Larvae also feed exclusively on K sambucifolia. Larvae go through six instars and diapause in the 4th instar. Males search for females using only the patrolling tactic. Females are more sedentary than males. The study contributes to the knowledge of other Melitaeini in Europe and North America.
