A steerable rotary drilling system has a bottom hole assembly which includes, in addition to the drill bit, a modulated bias unit and a control unit, the bias unit comprising a number of hydraulic actuators around the periphery of the unit, each having a movable thrust member which is hydraulically displaceable outwardly for engagement with the formation of the borehole being drilled. Each actuator may be connected, through a control valve, to a source of drilling fluid under pressure and the operation of the valve is controlled by the control unit so as to modulate the fluid pressure supplied to the actuators as the bias unit rotates. If the control valve is operated in synchronism with rotation of the bias unit the thrust members impart a lateral bias to the bias unit, and hence to the drill bit, to control the direction of drilling. Pulses transmitted through the drilling fluid as a result of operation of the bias unit are detected and interpreted at the surface, or at a different location downhole, to obtain information regarding the operation of the bias unit or other parts of the bottom hole assembly. Data signals from downhole sensors may be arranged to modify the control and operation of the bias unit in such manner that the data is encoded as pulses generated in the drilling fluid by the bias unit.

An in situ process for treating an oil containing formation is provided. The process may include providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of the formation. The heat may be allowed to transfer from the one or more heaters to a part of the formation such that heat from the one or more heat sources pyrolyzes at least some hydrocarbons within the part. Hydrocarbons may be produced from the formation.

In situ thermal processing of an oil reservoir formation

In an embodiment, a method of treating a kerogen and liquid hydrocarbon containing formation in situ may include providing heat from one or more heat sources to at least a portion of the formation. Heat may be allowed to transfer from the one or more heat sources to a part of the formation. In some embodiments, at least a portion of liquid hydrocarbons in the part may be mobilized. At least a portion of kerogen in the part may be pyrolyzed. In certain embodiments, a pressure within at least a part of the formation may be controlled. The pressure may be controlled to be at least about 2.0 bars absolute. A mixture may be produced from the formation.

In situ recovery from a kerogen and liquid hydrocarbon containing formation

A process may include providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of a subsurface formation. Heat may transfer from one or more heaters to a part of a formation. In some embodiments, heat from the one or more heat sources may pyrolyze at least some hydrocarbons in a part of a subsurface formation. Hydrocarbons and/or other products may be produced from a subsurface formation. Certain embodiments describe apparatus, methods, and/or processes used in treating a subsurface or hydrocarbon containing formation.

Thermal processes for subsurface formations

An in situ process for treating a tar sands formation is provided. The process may include providing heat from one or more heaters to at least a portion of the formation. The heat may be allowed to transfer from the one or more heaters to a part of the formation such that heat from the one or more heat sources pyrolyzes at least some hydrocarbons within the part. Hydrocarbons may be produced from the formation.

In situ thermal processing of a tar sands formation

The present invention provides a method for forming wellbores. In one method, one or more wellbores are drilled along preplanned paths based in part upon seismic surveys performed from the surface. An acoustic transmitter conveyed in such wellbores transmits acoustic signals at a one or more frequencies within a range of frequencies at a plurality of spaced locations. A plurality of substantially serially spaced receivers in the wellbores and/or at surface receive signals reflected by the subsurface formations. The sensors may be permanently installed in the boreholes and could be fiber optic devices. The receiver signals are processed by conventional geophysical processing methods to obtain information about the subsurface formations. This information is utilized to update any prior seismographs to obtain higher resolution seismographs. The improved seismographs are then used to determine the profiles of the production wellbores to be drilled. Borehole seismic imaging may then be used to further improve the seismographs and to plan future wellbores. Crosswell tomography may be utilized to further update the seismographs to manage the reservoirs. The permanently installed sensors may also be used to monitor the progress of fracturing in nearby wells and thereby provide the necessary information for controlling fracturing operations.

Method of obtaining improved geophysical information about earth formations

An apparatus and method are disclosed for obtaining samples of pristine formation fluid, using a work string (6) designed for performing other downhole work such as drilling, workover operations, or re-entry operations. An extendable element (24, 26, 45) extends against the formation wall to obtain the pristine fluid sample. While the test tool (16) is in a standby condition, the extendable element (24, 26, 45) is withdrawn within the work string, protected by other structure from damage during operation of the work string (6). The apparatus is used to sense downhole conditions while using a work string (6), and the measurements taken can be used to adjust working fluid properties without withdrawing the work string (6) from the bore hole (4). When the extendable element (24, 26, 45) is a packer (24, 26), the apparatus can be used to prevent a kick from reaching the surface, adjust the density of the drilling fluid, and thereafter continuing use of the work string.

Formation isolation and testing apparatus and method

An apparatus and method are disclosed for obtaining samples of pristine formation or formation fluid, using a work string designed for performing other downhole work such as drilling, workover operations, or re-entry operations. An extendable element extends against the formation wall to obtain the pristine formation or fluid sample. A steerable motor system with integrated formation evaluation logging capacity is presented. The device comprises a housing, a formation resistivity logging tool, a surface signaling device, a density logging tool, a porosity logging tool and a downhole motor and drill. The formation resistivity logging tool is located below the downhole motor and is mounted within the housing wherethrough a drive shaft, extending from the downhole motor, is disposed. Power and signal cables are located within an outer shell of the housing and connect the surface signaling device with the resistivity logging tool. In an alternate embodiment, the resistivity logging tool is located between a motor stabilizer and the drill bit. The present invention allows for increased drill angle during wellbore drilling and formation evaluation.
