The adaptive cancellation circuit is configured to generate a cancellation signal without requiring an injected signal. A radiotelephone includes a multifunctional headset that operates in two different modes. According to a first mode, the headset may be mounted on a radiotelephone body where it serves as a speaker and microphone for the radiotelephone. Also, the headset can be separated from the body of the portable radiotelephone and placed on the head of the user. In this mode of operation, the headset receives and transmits signals from and to the radiotelephone body during a call, thus providing hands-free operation. The headset can be attached to a user's head by an ear clip. The headset and body may include low power RF transceivers. The headset may contain power saving circuitry to minimize power drain from an internal battery. The battery may be recharged whenever the headset is fixed to the radiotelephone.

Retrieving a desired telephone number from a database in a mobile communication unit is facilitated by utilizing the frequency with which the user calls each telephone number stored in the database in a manner that allows the mobile communication unit to make a “best guess” of which phone number the user is seeking each time the user pushes a key while inputting a name or character string representing the person that the user wishes to call from the mobile communication unit. If the database does not include any name or character string potentially matching a desired character string entered via a keypad, the mobile communication unit automatically switches to normal phone number entry mode.

A first wireless link between a communication device and a wireless modem is automatically established, so that electronic messages can be easily and automatically transferred between the communication device and a data network via the first wireless link and a second link between the wireless modem and the data network. Each of the communication device and the wireless modem can automatically determine whether an electronic message is to be transferred. When one of the communication device and the wireless modem determines that an electronic message is to be transferred, the determining one of the communication device and the wireless modem sends a page signal to the other one of the communication device and the wireless modem. When the other one of the communication device and the wireless modem receives the page signal and responds, the first wireless link is established. The electronic message is then transferred between the communication device and the data network via the first wireless link and the second link. The communication device can be a portable computer such as a laptop computer, and the wireless modem can reside in a cellular or personal communication system (PCS) phone or the like.

In a mobile radio-telephone system including at least one base station transmitting information to subscriber telephones indicating whether they are being called, a method comprising the steps of dividing a repetitive frame period into a number of sleep-mode slots, determining a sleep-mode slot number to be used for transmitting a call to a particular subscriber telephone using an assigned subscriber telephone number, transmitting a calling message in said determined sleep-mode slot including the assigned subscriber telephone number, repeating transmission of the calling message a number of times as determined by system loading and available capacity to transmit such calls, and transmitting an indication of the number of repeated transmissions capacity and loading currently permits.
