A self-loading slider supports a transducer proximate a rotating disc. The slider includes a slider body having a leading edge, a trailing edge and first and second side edges. First and second side rails are positioned along the first and second side edges, respectively. The first and second side rails form coplanar air bearing surfaces. A cross rail extends between the first and second side rails to form a negative pressure cavity between the cross rail, the trailing edge and the first and second side rails. First and second trailing edge reliefs are formed within the first and second side rails, respectively. Each relief extends into a portion of the side rail from the negative pressure cavity, at the trailing edge to form first and second rail end portions adjacent the first and second side edges. The first and second rail end portions extend the air bearing surfaces to the trailing edge of the slider.

A floating type magnetic head is made of a polycrystalline material. A surface to be opposed to a magnetic recording medium is undulated with lands and grooves having a height different of 50 to 200 Å on an average and a repetition pitch of 5 to 20 microns on an average. The portions, in which the heights of the lands and the grooves abruptly change, extend along the boundaries of the polycrystals. The head surface opposed to the magnetic recording medium is sputter-etched to have the predetermined surface roughness.

A system for reading and writing binary information onto at least one optical recording surface of a magneto-optical disk includes a hydrodynamic bearing for traveling above the optical recording surface of the magneto-optical disk, an objective lens carried by the hydrodynamic bearing for focusing laser light to heat selected areas on the optical recording surface, and a magnetic writing head also carried by the hydrodynamic bearing for recording selected magnetic orientations, representing binary states, onto the heated areas on the magneto-optical memory disk.

Method of fabricating a magnetic head by sputter etching

A flying magnetic head is provided in which a head core, formed by laminating a magentic thin film on a non-magnetic substrate, is fitted into a slot formed in a slider through a bonding glass layer. The substrate of the head core and the slider are formed from the same material. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the head core substrate is substantially the same as that of the magnetic thin film. The thickness of the bonding glass layer which bonds the head core to the slider is reduced to 20 μM or less.

Flying magnetic head

A core burying channel is formed on the outer side surface of an air bearing rail of a floating magnetic head floating on a magnetic disk by an air-flow in a direction perpendicular to a magnetic recording medium travelling direction, and a magnetic core is buried in this core burying channel. This magnetic head can be produced easily by a production method which forms a core burying channel in a non-magnetic block, then deposits a magnetic material to the core burying channel and removes unnecessary portions of the magnetic material.
