In order to manufacture a steel pipe for an air bag which can cope with increase in the pressure of gas blown into an air bag and decreases in the wall thickness of an accumulator, a steel having a composition, mass %, of: C: 0.05-0.20%, Si: 0.1-1.0%, Mn: 0.20-2.0%, P: at most 0.025%, S: at most 0.010%, Cr: 0.05-1.0%, Al: at most 0.10%, if necessary at least one of Mo: at most 0.50%, Ni: at most 1.5%, Cu: at most 0.5%, V: at most 0.2%, Ti: at most 0.1%, Nb: at most 0.1%, and B: at most 0.005%, and also if necessary, at least one of Ca: at most 0.01%, Mg: at most 0.01%, and REM (rare earth elements): at most 0.01%, and a remainder of Fe and impurities is used to produce a steel pipe, and the pipe is then subjected to cold working to predetermined dimensions, then to heating to a temperature of at least the Ac1 transformation temperature followed by quenching, and then to tempering at a temperature no higher than the Ac1 transformation temperature.

Composition and continuous casting method for producing a low-sulphur, free-machining steel, substantially free of lead and including in weight percent about 0.05-0.40 copper, 0.005-0.040 tellurium, 0.002-0.15 bismuth, 0.002-0.05 tin, up to 0.55 carbon, and less than 0.25 sulphur, traces (up to about 0.005 weight percent) of barium, and the balance being iron. The elements bismuth, tellurium and tin are added as a molten alloy to the molten steel and uniformly distributed therethrough. The elements copper and barium can be added separately into the steel stream ahead of the molten addition inflow. The mass is then cooled to provide a solid metal casting substantially free of blemishes and relatively free of surface checking and tearing. The casting is characterized by enhanced machining properties.

Low-sulfur, lead-free free machining steel alloy

An alloy and alloy product has about 1.3 % to 1.7 % by weight concentration of silicon, along with iron, alloying elements, and inevitable impurities and exhibits improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and sulfide stress cracking in an intensive hydrogen-charged medium wherein H from the medium acts as an alloying element. The alloy is characterized by an Fe-Si-H system wherein Fe is a donor element with respect to Si and Si is an acceptor element with respect to Fe. Further, the alloying elements are Fe-Si noninteractive elements with respect to Fe and Si, such that the presence of the alloying elements are not donor or acceptor elements with respect to Fe or Si. In several alloy compositions, the alloy has between about 1.38 % to 1.63 % weight C. The alloy may further include between about .10 % to .25 % weight of C. In one particular alloy, the alloy composition includes about .18 % of C; although, in one alloy product, an alloy is used having about .16 % to .24 % weight of C. Further, in one or more alloy products, an alloy may have up to about 0.10 % weight of at least one alloying element selected from the group consisting of Be, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mm, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, W, Mo, Ge, Se, Rb, Zr, Nb, Ru, Ag, Cd, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, Re, Os, Pb, Bi, U, N and other REM.
