This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Bamboo fibre reinforced natural rubber composites were prepared by incorporation of different loadings of bamboo fibre. Two series of composites were studied i.e. composites with and without the presence of a bonding agent. The curing characteristics of the composites were determined and the composites were vulcanized at 150°C using a hot press. The properties of the composites such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, tear strength, elongation at break and hardness were studied. The adhesion between the bamboo fibre and the natural rubber were enhanced by the addition of bonding agent as exhibited by the tensile fracture surfaces of the composites using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of bonding agent also gave shorter curing time and enhanced mechanical properties.  2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Use of fly ash as eco-friendly filler in synthetic rubber for tire applications

The mechanical performance of semicrystalline polymers is strongly dependent on their underlying microstructure, consisting of crystallographic lamellae and amorphous layers. In line with that, semicrystalline polymers have previously been modeled as two and three-phase composites, consisting of a crystalline and an amorphous phase and, in case of the three-phase composite, a rigid-amorphous phase between the other two, having a somewhat ordered structure and a constant thickness. In this work, the ability of two-phase and three-phase composite models to predict the elastic modulus of semicrystalline polymers is investigated. The three-phase model incorporates an internal length scale through crystalline lamellar and interphase thicknesses, whereas no length scales are included in the two-phase model. Using linear elastic behavior for the constituent phases, a closed form solution for the average stiffness of the inclusion is obtained. A hybrid inclusion interaction model has been used to compute the effective elastic properties of polyethylene. The model results are compared with experimental data to assess the capabilities of the two- or three-phase composite inclusion model.

Micromechanical modeling of the elastic properties of semicrystalline polymers: A three-phase approach Part B Polymer physics

The effect of a large amount of precipitated amorphous white silica nanofiller, pre-treated with bis[3-triethoxysilylpropyl-)tetrasulfide (TESPT), on the mechanical properties of a sulfur-cured natural rubber (NR) was studied. TESPT chemically adheres silica to rubber and also prevents silica from interfering with the reaction mechanism of sulfur-cure. The silica particles were fully dispersed in the rubber, which was cured primarily by using sulfur in TESPT, or, by adding a small amount of elemental sulfur to the cure system. The cure was also optimized by incorporating sulphenamide accelerator and zinc oxide into the rubber. The hardness, tear strength, tensile strength, and stored energy density at break of the vulcanizate were substantially improved when the filler was added. Interestingly, these properties were also enhanced when the rubber was cured primarily by using sulfur in TESPT.

Structure-property relationship of polylactide/organoclay nanocomposites

Polylactic acid (PLA) and organically modified layered silicates (organoclay) with concentrations of 2-10 wt% were prepared by melt intercalation technique. The effects of organoclay on the mechanical and thermal properties of PLA were studied. Tensile properties were evaluated using an Instron Universal Tester. Modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC) and Thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) were performed to study the thermal behaviour of the prepared composites. The nanocomposites exhibited superior improvement of practical materials properties such as Young's modulus and thermal stability, as compared to the neat PLA. The Young's modulus drastically increased, whereas tensile strength and elongation at break decreased. The maximum degradation temperature of the hybrid increased linearly with an increasing amount of organoclay. However, MDSC has determined that the glass transition, cold crystallisation, and melting point temperatures were not significantly influenced by the presence of organoclay.

Mechanical and thermal properties of melt processed PLA/organoclay nanocomposites

Numerous studies of polylactide nanocomposites have been conducted. However, the role and importance of processing conditions is the subject of very few papers. In this work, polylactide and a constant amount (2 %w/w) of organoclay Cloisite® 30B via melt intercalation technique were produced. It is generally believed that maximum benefits are achieved when organoclay is well dispersed in PLA matrix. Experimental design was carried out based on Box-Behnken methods, a response surface methodology (RSM) well suited to the goal of process optimisation. Three levels of processing temperature, rotor speed and mixing time were chosen in this study. The response was Young's modulus. The interaction effects with the most influence on the Young's modulus of these PLA/organoclay nanocomposites are temperature and speed. Understanding the influence of processing conditions on the mechanical properties is needed for improving nanocomposites properties.
