Aquí también la autora discute que la constitución, transformación y disolución de redes constituye un proceso dinámico, sujeto a factores de índole cultural o ideológica y al contexto económico y político de acogida. El capítulo 1 (“Estructura de oportunidades, redes sociales y posición social”) consiste en una revisión muy completa de la literatura sobre las redes sociales. Primero, la autora discute el surgimiento, evolución y crítica del concepto redes sociales, ilustrando esta discusión con investigaciones empíricas que analizan desde diferentes ángulos el concepto (por ejemplo, el uso diferenciado que hacen hombres y mujeres de dichas redes). Segundo, defiende que los factores estructurales de las sociedades de destino afectan decisivamente a la dinámica interna de las redes, de tal manera que estos factores pueden limitar la generación de capital cultural y social entre los inmigrantes. Fragmented Ties, Salvadoran Immigrant Networks in America

Using data from the UK Quarterly Labour Force Survey, this paper examines the job finding methods of different ethnic groups in the UK. Our empirical findings suggest that, though personal networks are a popular method of finding a job for the ethnic minorities, the foreign born and those who identify themselves as non-British, they are not necessarily the most effective either in terms of gaining employment or in terms of the level of job achieved. However, there are some important differences across ethnic groups with some groups losing out disproportionately from using personal networks.

Job Contact Networks and the Ethnic Minorities

The starting-point in this themed issue of JEMS on theories of migration and social change is to view migration as a process which is an integral part of broader social transformations, but which also has its own internal dynamics and which shapes social transformation in its own right. Migration is linked in complex ways to class, gender, generation, ethnicity and other social cleavages, which are embodied in hierarchies of power and social status, in positions in home and host communities, and in work and domestic relationships—all of which may be transformed in the course of the migratory process. Taking account of migrants' agency, perceptions and aspirations, the articles in this special issue seek to link micro-level understanding of migration to macro-level trends in development and globalisation, through analysis of the social dynamics of migratory processes. The goal is to develop the means for a systematic explanatory account of migration and its engagement with broader processes of social change.
