In a multilayer dielectric reflector, treating the surface of the reflector selectively increases the amount of light transmitted through the reflector. Various surface treatments can be used to permit light to transmit through the reflector that would otherwise be reflected by the reflector. In one such reflector, different portions of the surface have different coupling efficiencies for coupling light having a high propagation angle into the multilayer reflector. Those portions having higher coupling efficiencies on each side of the reflector have a higher degree of transmission.

The recently developed double cell technique, which describes the optical response of an arbitrary semi-infinite dielectric crystal taking into account internal field effects, is extended to include the response of thick slabs. The surface sensitivity of the first technique is fully retained. The implications of the internal field effects on the microscopy of these thick slabs are examined for three simple model systems. Further, we investigated under which conditions deviations from classical Fresnel-behaviour are to be expected and how important these corrections are.

Exact solution of the optical response of thick slabs in the discrete dipole approach

From an algebraic modification of the Ewald microscopical theory of diffraction follows the dispersion relation valid from X-ray to visible-light regions. In the far-U.V. region we deduce from it an approximate dispersion relation and the generalized Snell law. The dependence of the refractive indices on the angle of incidence and the birefringence of a cubic crystal are demonstrated by numerical calculations based on our general formulae.

The influence of the Bragg diffractions on the coplanar and non-coplanar crystal truncation rod scattering is studied using the Ewald multiwave dynamical theory of diffraction. The resulting formulae are compared with the approximate ones of the kinematical theory and geometrical optics approximations.

The dielectric slab is considered as a system of classical dipoles fixed on the lattice points of N + 1 parallel planes of a general primitive crystal lattice. The dipoles interact with retarded electromagnetic and non-retarded mechanical forces. Thus media with spatial dispersion are also taken into account. Formulae are deduced for the intensity of the electromagnetic wave, reflected or transmitted by the dielectric slab. The resulting formulae are valid for all wavelengths where the dipole approximation is appropriate. Thus they include both the effects known in the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction as well as Snell's law and Fresnel's formulae for visible light and the effects caused by spatial dispersion.
