A history of fatigue

An extension of the celebrated Paris law for crack propagation is given to take into account some of the deviations from the power-law regime in a simple manner using the Wohler SN curve of the material, suggesting a more general ''unified law''. In particular, using recent proposals by the first author, the stress intensity factor K(a) is replaced with a suitable mean over a material/structural parameter length scale Da, the ''fracture quantum''. In practice, for a Griffith crack, this is seen to correspond to increasing the effective crack length of Da, similarly to the Dugdale strip-yield models. However, instead of including explicitly information on cyclic plastic yield, short-crack behavior, crack closure, and all other detailed information needed to eventually explain the SN curve of the material, we include directly the SN curve constants as material property. The idea comes as a natural extension of the recent successful proposals by the first author to the static failure and to the infinite life envelopes. Here, we suggest a dependence of this fracture ''quantum'' on the applied stress range level such that the correct convergence towards the Wohler-like regime is obtained. Hence, the final law includes both Wohler's and Paris' material constants, and can be seen as either a generalized Wohler's SN curve law in the presence of a crack or a generalized Paris' law for cracks of any size. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. A generalized Paris' law for fatigue crack growth

A modification of the Morrow and the Smith, Watson and Topper (SWT) mean stress correction models is proposed to account for the mean stress effect on fatigue life. The capability and accuracy of the proposed model are compared to those of the original Morrow and the SWT model using published mean stress fatigue test data. The proposed mean stress correction model was found to be superior to both the SWT and the Morrow model in the case of the Incoloy 901 superalloy and the ASTM A723 steel. On the other hand both the proposed and the original SWT model provided equally good correlation with experimental data in the case of 7075-T561 aluminium alloy and 1045 HRC 55 steel. The Morrow model was found to give the least accurate predictions for all four materials analysed.

A modification of Morrow and Smith–Watson–Topper mean stress correction models

Metals are the most widely used materials in engineering structures, and one of the most common failure modes of metal structures is fatigue failure. Although metal fatigue has been studied for more than 160 years, many problems still remain unsolved. In this article, a state-of-the-art review of metal fatigue is carried out, with particular emphasis on the latest developments in fatigue life prediction methods. All factors which affect the fatigue life of metal structures are grouped into four categories: material, structure, loading, and environment. The effects of these factors on fatigue behavior are also addressed. Finally, potential problems to be resolved in the near future are pointed out.

A state-of-the-art review on fatigue life prediction methods for metal structures

Metallic materials are extensively used in engineering structures and fatigue failure is one of the most common failure modes of metal structures. Fatigue phenomena occur when a material is subjected to fluctuating stresses and strains, which lead to failure due to damage accumulation. Different methods, including the Palmgren-Miner linear damage rule- (LDR-) based, multiaxial and variable amplitude loading, stochastic-based, energy-based, and continuum damage mechanics methods, forecast fatigue life. This paper reviews fatigue life prediction techniques for metallic materials. An ideal fatigue life prediction model should include the main features of those already established methods, and its implementation in simulation systems could help engineers and scientists in different applications. In conclusion, LDR-based, multiaxial and variable amplitude loading, stochastic-based, continuum damage mechanics, and energy-based methods are easy, realistic, microstructure dependent, well timed, and damage connected, respectively, for the ideal prediction model.
