Abstract: This manuscript provides the Nobel laureate's reflections on transaction cost economics. The overview section frames governance as the overarching concept and transaction cost economics as the means by which to breathe operational content into governance and organization. The vertical integration section identifies efficiency factors associated with determining when a firm produces a good or service to its own needs rather than outsource. A discussion of the rudiments of transaction cost analysis is subsequently provided. Puzzles and challenges that require pushing the logic of efficient governance to completion are examined and followed by concluding remarks.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an overview of transaction cost economics aimed at students who are new to but curious about the TCE literature, organized around the Carnegie Triple of discipline, interdisciplinary, and an active mind.
Abstract: This overview of transaction cost economics differs from prior overviews to which I have contributed in two respects: it is especially oriented at students who are new to but curious about the transaction cost economics (hereafter TCE) literature; and it is organized around the ‘Carnegie Triple’ – be disciplined; be interdisciplinary; have an active mind. It is partly autobiographical on the latter account.
