Recognition of sustainability issues around water resource consumption is gaining traction under global warming and land utilization complexities. These concerns increase the challenge of gaining an appropriate comprehension of the anthropogenic activities and natural processes, as well as how they influence the quality of surface water and groundwater systems. The characteristics of water resources cause difficulties in the comprehensive assessment regarding the source types, pathways, and pollutants behaviors. As the behavior and prediction of widely known contaminants in the water resources remain challenging, some new issues have developed regarding heavy metal pollutants. The main aim of this review is to focus on certain essential pollutants’ discharge from anthropogenic activities categorized based on land-use sectors such as industrial applications (solid/liquid wastes, chemical compounds, mining activities, spills, and leaks), urban development (municipal wastes, land use practices, and others), and agricultural practices (pesticides and fertilizers). Further, important pollutants released from natural processes classified based on climate change, natural disasters, geological factors, soil/matrix, and hyporheic exchange in the aquatic environment, are also discussed. Moreover, this study addresses the major inorganic substances (nitrogen, fluoride, and heavy metals concentrations). This study also emphasizes the necessity of transdisciplinary research and cross-border communication to achieve sustainable water quality using sound science, adaptable legislation, and management systems.

Various Natural and Anthropogenic Factors Responsible for Water Quality Degradation: A Review

Utilization potential of mine tailings in geopolymers: Physicochemical and environmental aspects

Carbonation is one of the critical problems that affects the durability of reinforced concrete; it is a reaction between CO2 gas and Ca (OH)2 when H2O is available, which forms powdery CaCO3 that alters the microstructure of the concrete by reducing its pH level and initiating corrosion that reduces the structure's service life. This study provides experimental information on the carbonation depths of samples from 10 separate existing reinforced concrete structures, where five are located in the inland area (Nicosia), while the other five are in the coastal area (Kyrenia) of the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus. The study found that the inland buildings have a higher depth of carbonation compared to the coastal buildings. The building structures in North Cyprus exhibit a higher rate of carbonation than the expected threshold within their life span. Constant values of B were yielded, which is useful in predicting carbonation depth. Using AI, the potential Hybrid Neuro-fuzzy model, which is comprised of an Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), Extreme Learning Machine (ELM), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and a Conventional Multilinear Regression (MLR) model, were employed for the estimation of carbonation depth using experimental data, including age, compressive strength, current density, and carbonation constant. Four different performance indexes were used to verify the modelling accuracy, namely Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Nash- Coefficient (NSE), and Correlation Coefficient (CC). The results indicated that the AI models (ANFIS, ELM, SVM) performed better than the linear model (MLR) with NSE-values higher than 0.97 in both the testing and training stages. The results also indicated that the prediction skills of ANFIS-M2 increased the performance accuracy of ELM-M2, SVM-M2, and MLR-M2, and the ANFIS-M1 model performed better than ELM-1, SVM-1 and MLR-1 models in terms of prediction accuracy. The final outcomes indicated the capability of the non-linear models (ANFIS, ELM, and SVM) in the prediction of Cd.

Implementation of hybrid neuro-fuzzy and self-turning predictive model for the prediction of concrete carbonation depth: A soft computing technique

Abstract In recent years, rapid development in the industrial sector has offered console to the people but at the same time, generates numerous amounts of effluent composed of toxic elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals that influences the environment and mankind hazardously. While the technological advancements are made in industrial effluent treatment, there arising stretch in the techniques directing on hybrid system that are effective in resource recovery from effluent in an economical, less time consuming and viable manner. The key objective of this article is to study, propose and deliberate the process and products obtained from different industries and the quantity of effluents produced, and the most advanced and ultra-modern theoretical and scientific improvements in treatment methods to remove those dissolved matter and toxic substances and also the challenges and perspectives in these developments. The findings of this review appraise new eco-friendly technologies, provide intuition into the efficiency in contaminants removal and aids in interpreting degradation mechanism of toxic elements by various treatment assemblages.

A comprehensive review on comparison among effluent treatment methods and modern methods of treatment of industrial wastewater effluent from different sources

Energy and energy security represent the strategic goal of the various countries of the world because of the importance of energy in fulfilling the needs of life. Energy consumption forms are considered active research topics these days with the aim of rationalizing energy consumption as much as possible. Energy sources are also a problem as they are not available in an equal manner to meet the need in the countries of the world. From here a deep looking after the energy sources and the alternatives become of great importance. In this study, investigation about energy sources and alternatives in Jordan, with the aim of taking a sufficient idea of what is available in Jordan from the sources and alternatives. Jordan is depending on the imported oil from the neighborhood countries by 95% of the total needs of the energy generation. The energy needs in Jordan increased by 5% annually on average were some times more than 5% as the energy needs increase in 2019 by 8.5% compared to 2018. This work highlight an assessment of the energy sources in Jordan with the aim of exploring the ways to enhance the energy situation in Jordan by adopting renewable energy with the energy systems in Jordan. The work also proposes some solutions to the energy problem from switching to energy-saving buildings and benefiting from the energy lost sources Finally, it emphasizes the importance of confronting climate change to preserve the environment. • This work analyses energy sources in Jordan and studies ways to improve their use and diversify their sources. • This work highlight the sources of strength and opportunities as well as weaknesses and threats facing the energy in Jordan. • The rate of increase in energy demand in Jordan is 5% annually and is still rising. • Solar and wind energy are among the most important renewable energy sources available in Jordan. • The use of energy-saving devices is one of the most important reasons to conserve energy. 

Energy sources assessment in Jordan

Mining is very vital to the production of goods, services and infrastructure; it advances the quality of lives in the society. However, the possible hazard of waste and radioactivity generated by mining, dumping and tailing, has called on the society to find ways of seeking remedy that will adequately treat mining waste from mine dump, tailing and abandoned mine. Mine waste reuse and recycling in mining industries could offer cost-effective benefits through offsetting raw material requirements and decreasing the volumes of waste to be managed. This review discussed mine dump pollution monitoring and mine dump management strategies for some selected countries. Impact and mechanism of mine damage to the environment was discussed together with the remediation principles. It further examines the mining Act and regulations of the same selected countries. Emphasised was placed on the enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and standards. Practical ways in which country’s state authority and civil society can keep a close watch and enhance the enforcement of laws and regulations were highlighted. The prediction for the control of mineral exploration and environmental assessment was also discussed for executing a specific control to take preventive measures. Management techniques used in combating the impact of mine dump, stockpiles and tailing on the environment were discussed. In addition, radioactivity in mine and its monitoring and control was discussed.
