In every scientific undertaking that is to break new ground, one has to have a goal, a working hypothesis, or a leading idea or fact. This will encourage research and help in the pursuit of a worth-while objective, be it the enrichment of knowledge or the elaboration of a practical purpose. A medicinal scientist who hopes to find a new biologically active drug will have to be guided by such considerations.

Synopsis The stability of cosmetics must be examined from a chemical, physical and biological viewpoint. Biological stability is dependent on many factors including preservative effectiveness, preservative stability and the levels of initial and in-use contamination. Bronopol, a highly active preservative with less than ideal stability in alkaline systems, may be usefully combined with more stable preservatives whose activity is generally lower at high pH. Some consequences of preservative decomposition are discussed.

Many common suspending agents are ionic in nature—usually anionic. Ionic reactions may be useful in controlling taste problems, but they can also lead to inactivation of therapeutic agents. In testing 18 suspending agents, Professor •Miller and Joseph Nakashima of the University of Southern California found that bentonite and Veegum precipitated a variety of cationic agents.
