A communication device (CD) exchanges messages with an implantable infusion pump via telemetry such that commands are supplied thereto and operational information is obtained therefrom. The CD is controlled, at least in part, by a processor IC according to a software program operating therein and provides feedback to a user via a visual display, an audio alarm, and a vibrational alarm, and allows input from the user via a touch sensitive keypad. Certain input functions are restricted by password. The visual display includes an icon and fixed element display region and a bitmap display region. The fixed element display region includes time and date displays, battery and drug level displays that decrement, and a moving delivery state display. Various screens allow operational or log information to be displayed and/or user entry of commands. Program features when disabled are removed from a series of screen options that can be scrolled through.

Because the device includes an active transponder, instead of a transponder which relies on magnetic coupling for power, the device has a much greater range.

Background Concern has arisen that the use of hand-held cellular telephones might cause brain tumors. If such a risk does exist, the matter would be of considerable public health importance, given the rapid increase worldwide in the use of these devices. Methods We examined the use of cellular telephones in a case–control study of intracranial tumors of the nervous system conducted between 1994 and 1998. We enrolled 782 patients through hospitals in Phoenix, Arizona; Boston; and Pittsburgh; 489 had histologically confirmed glioma, 197 had meningioma, and 96 had acoustic neuroma. The 799 controls were patients admitted to the same hospitals as the patients with brain tumors for a variety of nonmalignant conditions. The antenna radiation pattern and other characteristics are significantly altered by the presence of the human body. This interaction as well as the resultant deposition of microwave power in the body (specific absorption rate-SAR) are of particular interest for cellular telephones and similar communication devices. This paper builds on and extends the previous analyses of parameters that influence the antenna-user interaction. Computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived, high-resolution models of the human head are used. The numerical analysis is performed with the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The specific findings are: 1) a box model of a human head provides grossly distorted and unreliable results for the antenna radiation pattern; 2) a spherical model of the human head provides results that are relatively close to those obtained with a relatively simple, but more realistic, head model; 3) the SAR values obtained with spherical or simplified head models, that do not include the ear, are greater than those for a realistic head model that includes the ear; and 4) a hand holding the handset absorbs significant amount of antenna output power, which can be considerably decreased by modifying the geometry of the handset metal box.

A study of the handset antenna and human body interaction

Describes a method to quantify the RF exposure of the users of portable cellular phones in terms of specific absorption rate (SAR). The method involves a robotic system to accurately position an isotropic E-field probe within equivalent biological tissue. The user of cellular phones is simulated by a simple human model (a phantom) consisting of a thin shell of fibreglass filled with a liquid having the complex dielectric constant of human brain tissue. The authors present the results of the dosimetric assays conducted using current and previous models of cellular telephones. The peak SAR values detected using the measurement method described are below the limits recommended by the National Council for Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) Report 86 for the protection of humans exposed to RF electromagnetic energy. >

Electromagnetic energy exposure of simulated users of portable cellular telephones

An integral diversity antenna especially suited for use in a laptop computer device without the need for changing or otherwise altering such devices pre-established form factor. Two separately located printed circuit board antenna structures are orthogonally mounted in an associated counterpoise. One such antenna structure is vertically polarized and the other horizontally polarized. In this manner, both spatial and polarization diversity is achieved. The counterpoise serves the additional purpose of affecting both RFI and EMI shielding of the laptop computer's LCD display and driven circuitry.
