Miracle of education: the principles and practices of teaching and learning in Finnish schools

The network of small rural schools in Finland has been radically weakened since the global recession of the 1990s. This article focuses on the social role of rural schools and the phenomenon of school closures. Our aim is to look at rural schools from the viewpoint of local residents and examine how they experience school closures. We seek to hear the local voice that often remains silent in closure processes. The contributions to rural education research rise from the Finnish context and from the interview data, which incorporate multiple local stakeholder perspectives regarding rural schools and the rural school-community connection. The study uses empirical data collected from interviews with people who have experienced school closures in their villages or municipalities. Social capital is used to understand the role of a school in the community: We study its role as a producer and maintainer of local social capital.

The Arctic-Barents Region is facing numerous pressures from a variety of sources, including the effect of environmental changes and extractive industrial developments. The threats arising out of these pressures result in human security challenges. This book analyses the formation, and promotion, of societal security within the context of the Arctic-Barents Region. It applies the human security framework, which has increasingly gained currency at the UN level since 1994 (UNDP), as a tool to provide answers to many questions that face the Barents population today. The study explores human security dimensions such as environmental security, economic security, health, food, water, energy, communities, political security and digital security in order to assess the current challenges that the Barents population experiences today or may encounter in the future. In doing so, the book develops a comprehensive analysis of vulnerabilities, challenges and needs in the Barents Region and provides recommendations for new strategies to tackle insecurity and improve the wellbeing of both indigenous and local communities. This book will be a valuable tool for academics, policy-makers and students interested in environmental and human security, sustainable development, environmental studies and the Arctic and Barents Region in particular.

The construction of hydropower plants in Finland’s Kemijoki and Iijoki rivers was a death blow to salmon migration in both stretches of water. Fishing migratory fish was an important source of livelihood to people living along and near the Kemijoki and Iijoki and one of the main reasons that once drew permanent settlement to the riversides. In this article we examine the meanings of migratory fish from the perspective of local people. We ask how local people have experienced the loss of salmon and how they have adapted to their new home environment that has radically changed due to alteration of the river. Besides the nutritional meaning, we have found many other aspects of migratory fish. Migratory fish and their annual rhythm belonged to the rivers’ landscapes; they had aesthetic importance as well as a strong social aspect. Losing salmon has been a catastrophe that local people still, after 60 years, find hard to accept.
