Plant hormones and seed germination

The soil environment is interesting and complicated. There are so many interactions taking place in the soil, which determine the properties of soil as a medium for the growth and activities of plants and soil microorganisms. The soil fungi, arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM), are in mutual and beneficial symbiosis with most of the terrestrial plants. AM fungi are continuously interactive with a wide range of soil microorganisms including nonbacterial soil microorganisms, plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, mycorrhiza helper bacteria and deleterious bacteria. Their interactions can have important implications in agriculture. There are some interesting interactions between the AM fungi and soil bacteria including the binding of soil bacteria to the fungal spore, the injection of molecules by bacteria into the fungal spore, the production of volatiles by bacteria and the degradation of fungal cellular wall. Such mechanisms can affect the expression of genes in AM fungi and hence their performance and ecosystem productivity. Hence, consideration of such interactive behavior is of significance. In this review, some of the most important findings regarding the interactions between AM fungi and soil bacteria with some new insights for future research are presented.

Interactions between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and soil bacteria

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can enhance plant growth by alleviating soil stresses. Although previously investigated, some new interesting details are presented regarding the alleviating affects of Azospirillum sp. on wheat growth under drought stress in this research work. We hypothesized that the isolated strains of Azospirillum sp. may alleviate the adverse effects of drought stress on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth. Three different strains of Azospirillumlipoferum (B1, B2 and B3) were used to inoculate wheat seedlings under drought. During the flowering stage the seedlings were subjected to three drought levels with five different time longevity, including control. Pots were water stressed at 80% (S0), 50% (S1) and 25% (S2) of field capacity moisture in a 25 day-period. Soil and plant water properties including water potential and water content, along with their effects on bacterial inoculum and wheat growth, were completely monitored during the experiment. While stress intensity significantly affected bacterial population and wheat growth, stress longevity only affected wheat water potential and water content. Compared to uninoculated treatments strain B3 (fixing and producing the highest amounts of N and auxin, respectively, with P solubilizing and ACC-deaminase activities) increased wheat yield at S1 and S2 by 43 and 109%, respectively. However, strain B2 (producing siderophore) was the most resistant strain under drought stress. The results of this experiment may elucidate the more efficient strains of Azospirillum sp. for wheat inoculation under drought stress and the mechanisms by which they alleviate the stress.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) growth enhancement by Azospirillum sp. under drought stress

It is likely to provide plants with their necessary nutrients using chemical and biological fertilization. Although chemical fertilization is a quick method, it is not recommendable economically and environmentally, especially if overused. Biological fertilization is the use of soil microbes including arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria to inoculate plants. It has been proved that biological fertilization is an efficient method to supply plants with their necessary nutrients. It is economically and environmentally recommendable, because it results in sustainability. In this article, some of the most important details including the mechanisms and processes regarding the effects of soil microbes on the availability and hence uptake of nutrients by plant are reviewed. Such details can be important for the selection and hence production of microbial inoculums, which are appropriate for biological fertilization.

Soil microbes and the availability of soil nutrients

With respect to the adverse effects of chemical fertilization on the environment and their related expenses, especially when overused, alternative methods of fertilization have been suggested and tested. For example, the combined use of chemical fertilization with organic fertilization and/or biological fertilization is among such methods. It has been indicated that the use of organic fertilization with chemical fertilization is a suitable method of providing crop plants with adequate amount of nutrients, while environmentally and economically appropriate. In this article, the importance of soil microbes to the ecosystem is reviewed, with particular emphasis on the role of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and endophytic bacteria in providing necessary nutrients for plant growth and yield production. Such microbes are beneficial to plant growth through colonizing plant roots and inducing mechanisms by which plant growth increases. Although there has been extensive research work regarding the use of microbes as a method of fertilizing plants, it is yet a question how the efficiency of such microbial fertilization to the plant can be determined and increased. In other words, how the right combination of chemical and biological fertilization can be determined. In this article, the most recent advances regarding the effects of microbial fertilization on plant growth and yield production in their combined use with chemical fertilization are reviewed. There are also some details related to the molecular mechanisms affecting the microbial performance and how the use of biological techniques may affect the efficiency of biological fertilization.

Soil microbes and plant fertilization

Fluorescent pseudomonads are among the most influencing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in plants rhizosphere. In this research work the plant growth-promoting activities of 40 different strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Pseudomonasputida, previously isolated from the rhizosphere of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and canola (Brassica napus L.) and maintained in the microbial collection of Soil and Water Research Institute, Tehran, Iran, were evaluated. The ability of bacteria to produce auxin and siderophores and utilizing P sources with little solubility was determined. Four strains of Wp1 (P.putida), Cfp10 (Pseudomonas sp.), Wp150 (P. putida), and Wp159 (P. putida) were able to grow in the DF medium with ACC. Thirty percent of bacterial isolates from canola rhizosphere and 33% of bacterial isolates from wheat rhizosphere were able to produce HCN. The results indicate that most of the bacteria, tested in the experiment, have plant growth-promoting activities. This is the first time that such PGPR species are isolated from the Iranian soils. With respect to their great biological capacities they can be used for wheat and canola inoculation in different parts of the world, which is of very important agricultural implications.
