In this paper, an energy-based Lyapunov function control technique is developed for a three-phase shunt hybrid active filter (SH-AF) to compensate harmonics generated by nonlinear loads and is applied for balanced operation. The method provides compensation for harmonic load current components. The strategy determines the control law that makes the derivative of the Lyapunov function always negative for all values of the states. The dc bus voltage of the SH-AF is maintained to 50 V, which is significantly lower than that of the conventional hybrid active filter. The rating of the active filter in the SH-AF system is much smaller than the one used in the conventional shunt active power filter because the passive filter takes care of the major burden of compensation. The SH-AF performances, during both nominal and severe operating conditions, are then evaluated using a dSPACE DS1104 controller board, supported by a Matlab/Simulink Real-Time Workshop environment. A significantly high correlation between the experimental results and the theoretical model, implemented with Simulink/Matlab, is obtained.

A Lyapunov-Function-Based Control for a Three-Phase Shunt Hybrid Active Filter

Analog circuits play a vital role in ensuring the availability of industrial systems. Unexpected circuit failures in such systems during field operation can have severe implications. To address this concern, we developed a method for detecting faulty circuit condition, isolating fault locations, and predicting the remaining useful performance of analog circuits. Through the successive refinement of the circuit's response to a sweep signal, features are extracted for fault diagnosis. The fault diagnostics problem is posed and solved as a pattern recognition problem using kernel methods. From the extracted features, a fault indicator (FI) is developed for failure prognosis. Furthermore, an empirical model is developed based on the degradation trend exhibited by the FI. A particle filtering approach is used for model adaptation and RUP estimation. This method is completely automated and has the merit of implementation simplicity. Case studies on two analog filter circuits demonstrating this method are presented.

Diagnostics and Prognostics Method for Analog Electronic Circuits

The deep integration of renewable energy resources, including solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine (WT) energy, mainly depend on the inexpensive technological improvement of global emissions and the precise techniques for power quality. Grid-connected inverters act as key components in distributed generation systems for cutting-edge technology. The inverter connects the renewable energy sources and power distribution network systems for the conversion of power. In grid-connected systems, several current and voltage harmonics affect the system performances. Likewise, highly unstable devices coupled with the growing demand for nonlinear loads and renewable energy resources influence the power networks and systems performance in terms of power quality. The effective solutions to these problems are passive filters (PFs), static var generators, and active power filters (APFs). However, the use of PFs in a high-power system increases its cost, size, and weight. This study aims to assess the most advanced APFs by reducing the number of power switches and focus on the reduction of cost, size, and weight of grid-connected inverters. Several studies compared and evaluated reduced-switch-count APF inverter topologies, such as AC–AC, back-to-back, and common leg, under the single-phase and three-phase systems. Recently, cost-effective solutions to reduce the number of components, transformerless inverters, multilevel and multifunctional inverters based on the APF in PV, and wind energy conversion systems have been greatly explored. The current techniques and their limitations for developing advanced inverter-based devices for renewable energy systems are discussed with justifications. Therefore, this review would potentially help industrial researchers improve power quality in PV and WT energies and power distribution network systems.

Active power filter (APF) for mitigation of power quality issues in grid integration of wind and photovoltaic energy conversion system

The capacitive-coupling grid-connected inverter (CGCI) is coupled to the point of common coupling via a second-order LC branch. Its operational voltage is much lower than that of a conventional inductive-coupling grid-connected inverter (IGCI) when it serves as a multifunctional inverter to compensate reactive power and transfer active power simultaneously. It is a promising solution for microgrid and building-integrated distributed generator systems. A quasi-proportional-resonant (quasi-PR) controller is applied to reduce the steady-state current tracking errors of the CGCI in this paper. The quasi-PR controller generates the voltage reference for use of carrier-based pulse-width modulation, which can effectively reduce output current ripples. The second-order coupling impedance of the CGCI causes its modeling and controller design to differ from that of the conventional IGCI. A comprehensive design method for the quasi-PR controller in a CGCI is developed. The quasi-PR controller is also compared with a proportional-integration current controller. Simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the quasi-PR controller and its design method in a CGCI. The current tracking errors are greatly reduced when the quasi-PR controller rather than the proportional-integration controller is applied. Experimental results are also provided to validate the CGCI as a multifunctional grid-connected inverter.

Analysis, Design, and Implementation of a Quasi-Proportional-Resonant Controller for a Multifunctional Capacitive-Coupling Grid-Connected Inverter

Magnetically controlled reactors (MCRs) are usually used as three-phase shunt reactors. They have low harmonic distortion independent of the third harmonic current because most three-phase MCRs are delta connected. However, as arc suppression coils, MCRs are operated in the single-phase mode, and the harmonics can be much higher than those of three-phase MCRs. In this paper, the structure and the mathematical model of a two-stage saturable MCR (TSMCR) are proposed. There are two stages with different lengths and areas in the iron cores. The stages saturate at different times when the TSMCR outputs reactive current. The current harmonics of the first saturated stage can be compensated for when the second stage begins to saturate, to reduce the total harmonics of the output current. The mathematical model that reveals the distribution characteristics of the current harmonics for the TSMCR is also presented. A study of the mathematical model indicates that there are two key factors that affect the total current harmonics of the TSMCR. One is the parameter k, which represents the area ratio of the second stage to the first stage. The other one is the parameter m, which represents the ratio of the length of the first stage to the total length of the magnetic valve in the iron core. The simulations and experiments show that the maximum current harmonics of the novel MCR can be limited to 3.61% of the rated output current when k and m are chosen according to the theoretical mathematical model.

Modeling and Harmonic Optimization of a Two-Stage Saturable Magnetically Controlled Reactor for an Arc Suppression Coil

This paper presents results of a comparative study of two possible hybrid filter topologies, comprised of a passive and active stage, which can be implemented in any general dc supply distribution system. The main filter task is to mitigate current dynamics in the dc distribution system in order to prolong the operational life of delicate dc supplies, i.e., fuel cells, and to reduce the electromagnetic interferences between sensitive electronic circuits connected to the distribution net. The active stage is incorporated into the passive part in order to: 1) improve its insufficient attenuation in the low-frequency range and 2) source or sink any surplus energy flow between the dc source and load in case of low-frequency current dynamics. Two active stage topologies are proposed, analyzed, and evaluated in detail: 1) an active filter based on a single-leg inverter and 2) an active filter based on an electronic smoothing inductor. A special focus is on achieving attenuation at different voltage levels of the auxiliary supply and at different coupling inductances. The impact of the current ripple generated by the switching mode of the active filter operation is discussed as well. The active filter based on the single-leg inverter offers superior attenuation, particularly in the low-frequency range where attenuation is improved nearly for 15 dB compared to the passive filter.
