Résumé The ocean engine of NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) is a primitive equation model adapted to regional and global ocean circulation problems. It is intended to be a flexible tool for studying the ocean and its interactions with the others components of the earth climate system over a wide range of space and time scales. Prognostic variables are the three-dimensional velocity field, a linear or non-linear sea surface height, the temperature and the salinity. In the horizontal direction, the model uses a curvilinear orthogonal grid and in the vertical direction, a full or partial step z-coordinate, or s-coordinate, or a mixture of the two. The distribution of variables is a three-dimensional Arakawa C-type grid. Various physical choices are available to describe ocean physics, including TKE, GLS and KPP vertical physics. Within NEMO, the ocean is interfaced with a sea-ice model (LIM v2 and v3), passive tracer and biogeochemical models (TOP) and, via the OASIS coupler, with several atmospheric general circulation models. It also support two-way grid embedding via the AGRIF software. Il se veut un outil flexible pour étudier sur un vaste spectre spatiotemporel l’océan et ses interactions avec les autres composantes du système climatique terrestre. Les variables pronostiques sont le champ tridimensionnel de vitesse, une hauteur de la mer linéaire ou non, la temperature et la salinité. La distribution des variables se fait sur une grille C d’Arakawa tridimensionnelle utilisant une coordonnée verticale z à niveaux entiers ou partiels, ou une coordonnée s, ou encore une combinaison des deux. Différents choix sont proposés pour décrire la physique océanique, incluant notamment des physiques verticales TKE, GLS et KPP. A travers l’infrastructure NEMO, l’océan est interfacé avec des modèles de glace de mer, de biogéochimie et de traceurs passifs, et, via le coupleur OASIS, à plusieurs modèles de circulation générale atmosphérique. A scheme to represent the impact of urban buildings on airflow in mesoscale atmospheric models is presented. In the scheme, the buildings are not explicitly resolved, but their effects on the grid-averaged variables are parameterised. An urban quarter is characterised by a horizontal building size, a street canyon width and a building density as a function of height. The module computes the impact of the horizontal (roof and canyon floor) and vertical (walls) surfaces on the wind speed, temperature and turbulent kinetic energy. The computation of the shortwave and longwave radiation, needed to compute the temperature of the urban surfaces, takes into account the shadowing and radiation trapping effects induced by the urban canyons. The computation of the turbulent length scales in the TKE equation is also modified to take into account the presence of the buildings. The parameterisation is introduced into a mesoscale model and tested in a bidimensional case of a city over flat terrain. The new parameterisation is shown to be able to reproduce the most important features observed in urban areas better than the traditional approach which is based only on the modification of the roughness length, thereby retaining the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. The new surface exchange parameterisation is furthermore shown to have a strong impact on the dispersion characteristics of air pollutants in urban areas.

An Urban Surface Exchange Parameterisation for Mesoscale Models

OPA is a primitive equation model of both the regional and global ocean circulation. It is intended to be a flexible tool for studying ocean and its interactions with the others components of the earth climate system (atmosphere, sea-ice, biogeochemical tracers, ...) over a wide range of space and time scale. Prognostic variables are the three-dimensional velocity field and the thermohaline variables. The distribution of variables is a threedimensional Arakawa-C-type grid using prescribed zor s-levels. Various physical choices are available to describe ocean physics, including a 1.5 turbulent closure for the vertical mixing. OPA is interfaced with a sea-ice model, a passive tracer model and, via the OASIS coupler, with several atmospheric general circulation models. In addition, it can be run on many different computers, including shared and distributed memory multiprocessor computers.

To bridge the gaps between traditional mesoscale modelling and microscale modelling, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in collaboration with other agencies and research groups, has developed an integrated urban modelling system coupled to the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model as a community tool to address urban environmental issues. The core of this WRF/urban modelling system consists of the following: (1) three methods with different degrees of freedom to parameterize urban surface processes, ranging from a simple bulk parameterization to a sophisticated multi-layer urban canopy model with an indoor–outdoor exchange sub-model that directly interacts with the atmospheric boundary layer, (2) coupling to fine-scale computational fluid dynamic Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and Large-Eddy simulation models for transport and dispersion (TD addresses the daunting challenges of initializing the coupled WRF/urban model and of specifying the potentially vast number of parameters required to execute the WRF/urban model; explores the model sensitivity to these urban parameters; and evaluates the ability of WRF/urban to capture urban heat islands, complex boundary-layer structures aloft, and urban plume T&D for several major metropolitan regions. Recent applications of this modelling system illustrate its promising utility, as a regional climate-modelling tool, to investigate impacts of future urbanization on regional meteorological conditions and on air quality under future climate change scenarios. The integrated WRF/urban modelling system: development, evaluation, and applications to urban environmental problems

The Rapid Refresh (RAP), an hourly updated assimilation and model forecast system, replaced the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) as an operational regional analysis and forecast system among the suite of models at the NOAA/National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) in 2012. The need for an effective hourly updated assimilation and modeling system for the United States for situational awareness and related decision-making has continued to increase for various applications including aviation (and transportation in general), severe weather, and energy. The RAP is distinct from the previous RUC in three primary aspects: a larger geographical domain (covering North America), use of the community-based Advanced Research version of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model (ARW) replacing the RUC forecast model, and use of the Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation analysis system (GSI) instead of the RUC three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVar). A North American Hourly Assimilation and Model Forecast Cycle: The Rapid Refresh

The possibility of extending existing techniques for turbulence parameterization in the planetary boundary layer to attitude, orography-induced turbulence events is examined. Starting from a well-tested scheme, we show that it is possible to generalize the specification method of the length scales, with no deterioration of the scheme performance in the boundary layer. The new scheme is implemented in a two-dimensional version of a limited-area, numerical model used for the simulation of mesobeta-scale atmospheric flows. Three well-known cases of orographically induced turbulence are studied. The comparison with observations and former studies shows a satisfactory behavior of the new scheme.
