The aims of the present study were: (1) to supply further knowledge about variations in nonmetric cranial traits in relation to sex, age and laterality and (2) to evaluate biological distance between samples from a recent population. The incidence of 18 nonmetric variants of the cranium were determined in 3 adult samples of 394 skulls of known sex from North Sardinia (Sassari, Alghero and Ozieri); for the Sassari sample (n = 200) age at death was also known. Some significant sex differences were observed. Age did not appear to influence the frequency of the discontinuous traits but did for legibility. Side differences may provide important information about environmental influences. The interpopulation analysis indicates a stronger relationship between samples that are geographically closer (Sassari and Alghero), in accordance with other studies, strengthening the hypothesis of the validity of the use of nonmetric traits in the study of the peopling of a territory.

Scoring of nonmetric cranial traits: a population study.

This study provides values of anthropometric measurements and specific impedance, for a sample of 104 adults. The hypothesis that the body composition can be estimated more accurately from measurements of lengths and impedance values of the body segments than from the whole body was tested. The impedance of upper and lower extremities (arm and leg) and trunk were used to compute estimates of body composition parameters (FFM, FM, %F, TBW, ECW). The results were compared with those estimated by the impedance of the whole body. These comparisons demonstrated that significative differences resulted from body composition obtained by segmental impedance and by the whole body.

Estimation of body composition from bioelectrical impedance of body segments

Metopism, which is defined as a condition in which the two pieces of the frontal bone fail to merge in early childhood, displays varying degrees of incidence. In this study, the variation of the frequency of metopism across historical periods is investigated on the skulls of 487 adults from 12 different Ancient Anatolian populations dated to various periods of history ranging from the Neolithic to the first quarter of the 20th century. In addition, the study also examines the relationship of metopism to sex and cranial form. It is revealed that the frequency of metopism showed a relative increase across time periods in Anatolia after the Neolithic Period, with the exception of the Cevizcioglu Ciftligi population. However, no significant relationship was found between metopism and cranial form or sex. It is found that the frequency of metopism in Ancient Anatolia had a distribution range of 3.3–14.9%. This distribution shows that the inhabitants of Anatolia have a heterogeneous genetic make-up due to the geographical situation of Anatolia, which has been open to gene flow both in the past and at present. The frequency of metopism in Anatolian populations dated from the Neolithic to the first quarter of the 20th century.

The purpose of the present study was to analyse the replicability of the scoring of discontinuous traits. This was assessed on a sample of 100 skulls from the Frassetto collection (Dipartimento di Biologia Evoluzionistica Sperimentale of Bologna University) analysed through intraobserver comparisons: the discontinuous traits were determined on the same skulls and by the same observer on 3 separate occasions. The scoring was also assessed through interobserver comparisons: 3 different observers performed an independent survey on the same skulls. The results show that there were no significant differences in the discontinuous trait frequencies between the 3 different scorings by the same observer, but there were sometimes significant differences between different observers. Caution should thus be taken in applying the frequencies of these traits to population research. After an indispensable control of material conditions (subject age included), consideration must be given to standardisation procedures between observers, otherwise this may be an additional source of variability in cranial discontinuous trait scoring.

Scoring of nonmetric cranial traits: a methodological approach.

Nonmetric traits (NMTs) are often used by osteoarchaeologists in the study of human variation. Some NMTs are affected by environmental factors whereas others are genetic in origin. Such genetic variants have long been used to support the hypotheses on the history and divergence of human populations suggesting that some population groups can be genetically distinguished. However, when genetic NMTs occur in higher than expected frequency these can be interpreted as possible indicators of relatedness. This method is applied to a sample of 977 individuals from the Medieval Poulton Chapel, St. Owen’s Church and Norton Priory Collections, U.K. One hundred and twenty-six cranial and postcranial NMTs were examined to determine: 1) the prevalence, 2) whether there are significant differences between the sexes and/or by age category, 3) if there is variation in mechanical and genetic NMT frequency between the three samples and, 4) to explore possible familial relationships through hierarchal cluster analysis and burial spatial distribution. It is thought that family members are often buried near one another, suggesting that individuals sharing similar genetic NMTs would be buried within close proximity to each other. This thesis has revealed the frequency of 126 NMTs for each sample. No significant differences were reported between the sexes at Poulton Chapel whereas significant differences were noted at St. Owen’s Church and Norton Priory, especially for NMTs considered genetic in origin. For all samples, significant differences were found among the age categories. Intra-populational differences were explored between the three samples. The results of these comparisons highlight that 60 NMTs are shared between the Poulton Chapel and Norton Priory Collection, while St. Owen’s Church only shares few traits with both sites. This suggests a probable geographical north-south divide between the three sites. Finally, the hierarchal cluster analysis identified probable familial relationships for the Norton Priory sample. This is supported by the burial spatial distribution and historical documentary evidence. Unfortunately, this analysis was unsuccessful for St. Owen’s Church with limited results for the Poulton Chapel sample. Future research is required to incorporate aDNA analysis to confirm the likelihood of familial links within these sites, supporting the use of certain NMTs is the use of establishing familial relationships.

Skeletal variation as a possible reflection of relatedness within three Medieval British populations

This paper discusses some problems relating to the study and the utilization of discontinuous traits in anthropology. The importance of sex, age and laterality in the manifestation of these traits is discussed on the basis of investigations on a numerous skeletal sample of Siena (Tuscany, Italy) and on data from literature. It is pointed out that sides and sexes should be considered separately. The age of adult subjects seems to be insignificant as the incidence of these traits is concerned.

SummaryAnalysis of digital and palmar dermatoglyphics in an Italian mountain population was carried out. Dermatoglyphic variability was particularly investigated in samples from four different valleys. Microgeographical differences in qualitative and quantitative traits among valleys were found. The relationship between degree of endogamy and dermatoglyphic differences is discussed. The biological repercussion of isolation in the history of this Apennine population is also pointed out by means of comparisons with a nearby plains population characterized by low inbreeding.

Body composition was estimated in 169 young tennis players using the multi-frequency impedance method to predict their fatfree-mass, fat, extra-cellular water, and total body water. Bioelectrical impedances at 1, 5, 10, 50 and 100 kHz were determined. Ratios of impedance at low to high frequencies (Z1/Z100; Z5/Z100) were also used as indicators of body water distribution. This sample is characterized by a greater body mass — fat mass, above all-than other Italian sport participants. Sexual dimorphism in body composition is also evident in this sample. The parameters of body composition, predicted by impedance measurements were compared with parameters obtained through other methods (skinfolds and BMI) on the same subjects. Results varied considerably, in relation to the various equations or different techniques employed. Besides demonstrating the value of multifrequency impedance measurements in the assessment of body composition, our findings indicate the necessity of further methodological research to validate the method under controlled conditions.
