OFDM and MC-CDMA for Broadband Multi-User Communications, WLANs and Broadcasting

Wavelets have been favorably applied in almost all aspects of digital wireless communication systems including data compression, source and channel coding, signal denoising, channel modeling and design of transceivers. The main property of wavelets in these applications is in their flexibility and ability to characterize signals accurately. In this paper recent trends and developments in the use of wavelets in wireless communications are reviewed. Major applications of wavelets in wireless channel modeling, interference mitigation, denoising, OFDM modulation, multiple access, Ultra Wideband communications, cognitive radio and wireless networks are surveyed. The confluence of information and communication technologies and the possibility of ubiquitous connectivity have posed a challenge to developing technologies and architectures capable of handling large volumes of data under severe resource constraints such as power and bandwidth. Wavelets are uniquely qualified to address this challenge. The flexibility and adaptation provided by wavelets have made wavelet technology a strong candidate for future wireless communication.

A Review of Wavelets for Digital Wireless Communication

As the technique of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has the ability to overcome the effect of multipath and to obtain high spectral efficiency of the communication channel, it is generally considered as one of the most effective methods to realize the high-speed digital communication system over the low-voltage powerline. This paper proposes a novel OFDM method, in which the cosine carriers of the conventional OFDM system are replaced with the orthonormal wavelets. A quantitative index used to measure the multipath interference, including the intersymbol interference (ISI) and the interchannel interference (ICI), is induced with a filter bank-based multicarrier transmission system model. The effectiveness of the proposed OFDM over the conventional OFDM in reducing both the ISI and the ICI is verified on a model obtained from the measurements of a practical low-voltage powerline communication channel.

The passive optical networks proposed by Marhic and Siegman to evaluate the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of a linear array or a pixellated image (parallel input) are redesigned for the discrete wavelet transform or the wavelet packet (WP) decomposition. Using only asymmetric optical couplers, with a suitable power coupling ratio, it is shown that it is possible to optically implement Mallat's pyramidal decomposition scheme with a compactly supported wavelet basis function. The case of a serial input has a larger number of potential applications to optical communications systems or optical computing, and simple passive optical networks are presented that evaluate the DFT or the wavelet transform of a stream of optical digits, by using only Mach-Zehnder interferometers with output asymmetric couplers. In particular, an all-optical implementation of the WP-division demultiplexer for a waveform coded transmission system is given. The proposed networks are full-wavelength demultiplexers, as they split the spectrum of the incoming signal into a set of closed frequency channels; the filters have identical bandwidth and span the whole input spectrum. Using the WP-decomposition method, different subband filtering schemes can be designed, fabricating trees of quadrature mirror filters with the fiber or the integrated optics technology.

Fiber wavelet filters [and planar waveguide couplers for full-wavelength demultiplexers]

This paper establishes a necessary condition that must be satisfied by the modulation waveforms of any generalized waveforms for multicarrier (GWMC) system with better peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) than conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). GWMC systems include in particular all classical multicarrier modulation systems. As a consequence, we show that OFDM has the best PAPR performance over all GWMC systems that do not satisfy this necessary condition. We also identify an infinite family of GWMC systems with the same PAPR performance as OFDM. To illustrate our results, we present the simulations of the PAPR behavior for different GWMC systems, including some with better PAPR performance than OFDM.

A Necessary Condition for Waveforms With Better PAPR Than OFDM

Wavelet packet-division multiplexing (WPDM) is a high-capacity, flexible, and robust multiple-signal transmission technique in which the message signals are waveform coded onto wavelet packet basis functions for transmission. We derive an expression for the probability of error for a WPDM scheme in the presence of both impulsive and Gaussian noise sources and demonstrate that WPDM can provide greater immunity to impulsive noise than both a time-division multiplexing scheme and an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing scheme.
